I have run into one evening with a wealth of music and limited ticket cash.
my options: Rythm Devils (Kimock and Mickey Hart are the pull for me) $40 at a skating rink, basically (weird contract crap w/ vegoose)
KanNal (going to be leaving the area for 6 mos- been a heavy supporter)
John Popper Project. (Haven't seen him since he was fat)
what would you pick and why?

i listened to a couple of the rhythm devils shows from last week, and i was really shocked at how good they were....very tribal with some serious meltdown jams. they have some new robert hunter tunes, and jen durkin absolutely wails with it. For me, it would not even be a question as to who to see that night

I haven't heard the Rhythm Devils yet, Kimock and Mickey do kick ass though... it'd be hard to pass that up.

On the other hand, if you haven't seen John Popper in a few years that is a very good option. I got out to see a (free!) BT show last year for the first time in years and was blown away by how good it was. His energy's a lot higher now I think, and that might have had something to do with it. But I was surprised I liked his new stuff, too. I'd been worried that he would lose that certain pathetic "baby I want you but I can't have you" quality and I wasn't sure how to feel about it. Definitely as good/better than ever, though.

For me it'd be a tossup 'tween those two. :)

the Rhythm Devils. It is Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzman, Steve Kimock, and my main man on the bass MIKE GORDON! what a line up. it is going to be amazing!

It would have to be rhythm devils for me. without a doubt. unless i wanted to see friends before they left, then I would go see kanNal.

I would choose rythm devils too. That sounds like an awesome mix of musicians. I love john popper, but im not that crazy about dj logic and the john popper project. I would suggest to wait to see him with blues traveler.

    'twas the correct choice.
RD gave their "best show of tour" to hear the tourkids.
No setlist and I don't like spoilers, myself.

So, are they winding up for Vegoose, or did we get thye last just us juice?
either way, even if they'd not been so on (I never thought Jen Durkin could perform at this level. Quite a treat) the show would have been solid and fun, so no real gamble here.
Those going for Gordo, he has ample opportunity to prove his chops. With some songs his long time fans will appreciate.
I'm personally not that awed by Phish (simple matter of taste) but I liked his work with Kottke, and he seems to be a growing, evolving musician.
Kimock was his amazing self. Was great to hear him take orders. Mostly I see him with his own bands, so he's in control.
the terror twins were tight and innovative, Mickey was his perfectionist, bossy self. I'd imagine he'd be a tough boss. But he knows exactly what he wants and how to make that happen sonically. Reminded me of Zakir sound checks.
Sikiru Adepoju was new to me live, I have a tape somewhere... He never really stood out, but what I caught was a very skilled, passionate drummer used to working in a group.
I would have loved to have heard him higher in the mix.

The mix: Jon O'Leary is the freaking shit. He had to get his own system (a Meyer) that I've heard LoS and SCI sooooooo many times.
If anyone can make a roller rink sound good it is JonO.
    And he did.
crowd was a good happy crowd, the costumes by Vegoose should be over the top.
nice respectful folk. Good family vibe.

Call me crazy, but I did not dig the RD at all when I saw them in vermont. I didn't really feel Kimock was going anywhere with his leads, but then again, they are called the rythm devils for a reason.

here, (I haven't heard the VT show) Hart created some nice space for Kimock and no, it wasn't juicy K waves, but there was something open and less structured and jam with a mission about his playing.
better than the Cluttered Ones for sure.

Any chance that the VT show was Gordon oriented since that was a "hometown" show?

That's quite possible. I was thinking that, but it didn't seem like anybody was paying attention. He would shoot quick glances over at Bill before he would change things up but it didn't go anywhere.

ah... I read on the Kimock digest that RDevs played one Phish tune on the tour.
Anyone know what it was? I heard something familiar but not known (and it wasn't any of the new Hunter bits...check out Fountains of Wood)

maybe you and your gear can, but not just you brother. JonO is a wizard unparelleled. I've seen him in action when the main sound blew out but the in ears were still going (and so was SCI) I've seen him fix the dead spot at Red Rocks.

well my name is Myles O'Leary, must be something in the last name, because in the shittiest of box rooms, with a behringer mixer (if you know anything about audio gear, its a peice of shit) and some little front of house speakers i've made it sound like a classic London Hall...i've only being doing for a little while so I have much to learn, I'm kind of just being fatuous....but I will be one day doing sound for the best artist in the world, i guarantee it.
