Whether spring mouse traps (commonly called snap traps) are humane depends on their quality and placement. While many animal welfare organizations consider high-quality snap traps to be a humane lethal option, their effectiveness varies significantly.

    Humane Perspectives on Snap Traps

    • Quick Kill Advantage: Well-designed snap traps are intended to cause immediate unconsciousness and death by crushing the skull or upper vertebrae. The ASPCA and other welfare groups support their use as a more humane alternative to glue traps or poisons, which cause prolonged suffering.

    • Welfare Risks: If a trap is of poor quality or strikes the "wrong" spot, it may only injure the mouse (e.g., breaking a limb or crushing a jaw). This leaves the animal in excruciating pain until it dies of other causes.

    • Catch-and-Release Considerations: Some argue that even "humane" live traps can be inhumane if not checked hourly, as trapped mice become terrified, hungry, and thirsty. Additionally, house mice often do not survive being released into the wild.

    Comparison of Rodent Control Methods

Live Catch Trap High (if checked often) Extreme stress; low survival rate after release.

    My mouse is working fine.
Back in the day we used to glue the door shut on that trap door so the kids couldn't steal the mouse's ball.
