anyone hear about this? apparently three guys who went to high school with richard linklater are suing him for defamation of character. the guys' names are slater, wooderson, and floyd--three of the best characters from the movie. i think that's pretty weak, considering the movie is like a decade old now. they're just trying to come up.

my friend said they mentioned it on SNL, so i went to yahoo and typed in dazed & confused lawsuit. sure enough, its true. they could win because those aren't nicknames, it's their surnames, and apparently the characters were based on their personalities. they're trying to say that they just now decided to sue linklater because they thought the film would fade from existence, but it's only becoming more popular each year. think dvd royalties.
Great movie. That is pretty weak that they are just now coming forward, but I can kinda see how they deserve some of what the movie has made if the characters are indeed based on them.

yeah, slater was the acid head, randall pink floyd was the quarterback/stoner, and wooderson was mccoughnehey.
what people would do to get extra cash nowadays.. if they were so pissed off about this, it shouldnt have taken this long to do something about it.. people are strange..

I think that it makes sense, personally. Of course, like any young stoner I am inclined to side with Dazed and Confused but the lawsuit isn't completely without reason...
true...the reason i find it bogus is because a majority of film and novel characters are based on persons or a combination of persons with whom the writer is familiar with. the fact that they waited to press charges until they realized the film was such a commercial success is proof that they are driven by finances rather than by a feeling of truly being defamed. linklater should have been a bit more sly about his references though...
I think this is totally dull and to be honest, ide be very pleased if a friend of mine wrote a famous movie that had a character based on me in. Fuck money, thats what I say, and if theyre gonna sue, then let em sue, they hav'nt got a cat-in-hells chance of getting royalties. Like someone said, the sweet smell of DVD royalties have turned these guys into greedy people. whatever next??? Led Zep sueing because the film title is a song of theres?? The basic fact is that everyone has a few stoner friends, one or two jock friends and a few loverly ladies they know....I can see that half of us that love this film are just Slaters anyway PS, Dazed and confused is a great film for those of you who hav'nt seen it yet
