I parked randomly behind some car the other day and the back of the car had dancing bear stickers on the back as well as other of those stickers. How did they come up with the idea of dancing bears?lol
If I remember correctly... I read this in the book The Illustrated Trip. The dancing bears represented how Owsley (Bear) danced while he was at a grateful dead show. And most-likely under the influence of something he created. edit: from wikipedia The iconic "Dancing Bears" also first appeared on the reverse cover of this album(History of the Grateful Dead, Volume 1: Bear's Choice), painted by Thomas as an inside reference to Stanley; dubbed "Bear" as a young teen when he sprouted body hair before the rest of his friends, he had studied ballet in his early 20s and displayed a distinctive style of dancing while tripping on LSD at shows—becoming what his friends called "The Dancing Bear".
They are in reference to Owsley "The Bear" Stanley. He was a mass producer of LSD in the 60s and was the supplier for the Dead.
That's a cute story. I have a little yellow and black dancing bear plushie with a red collar sitting on top of my tv right now. He's so cute and he never fails to make me smile
