Deads on the back of my head have merged. three dreads have become one, it looks like a cat-o-nine tails where one large dread come out two inches then becomes 3 dreads. Those two inches are impossible to pull apart. imagine trying to pull apart a fully formed 2 inch(diameter) dread. My question is can I cut them to separate them?
Be very, very, very wary! I've known several people who ended up with phat dreads hanging on by just a couple of hairs that way. Cutting messes with the integrity of the "structure", for lack of a better term. Personally if it gets far enough along that I'd have to cut 'em, I let it go. Scissors go nowhere near my head!
When I had dreads- the entire back of my head was one dread, connected by one dread only. cutting is dangerous, if you do it have someone else help you and first explore the congo, think about all possible cuts and outcomes
i know cutting is bad, is tearing them apart just as bad? i've noticed lately that some of my dreads seem to be merging at the roots, and i've been pulling them apart but trying to be very careful not to rip the hair up too much .. i have quite a few loose hairs around still and keep pulling them out from the wrong dreadies (without breaking them) .. but i'm just worried if i tear them apart i might rip the hair?
Rip them. I have to do this on almost a daily basis. Yes, it can hurt a lot, but its much better than cutting... in fact, I've noticed that ripping them apart, seems to help tighten them. Micki, don't worry about ripping your hair too much... your hair is stronger than you think. I don't know, that's just me though.
have you tried slowly separating them from the root to the tip (direction that is) like a little bit at a time? thats the only thing that can get some of my dreads apart.
im at around 3.5 months and not once have i had problems with congoing...or pleasure. Most of the people seem to...kind of weird. In fact, i have like 1-2 teeny-tiny thin new ones that dumped the original dread and they've knotted up pretty hardcore by now, by themselves, but are still extra thin. maybe it's the length? most of my dreads dont even touch my shoulders, actually some of them are like 2-3 inches.
i don't have much of a congo problem, either. i've been trying to congo some of my tiny dreads into medium-sized ones, and only had success with the ones i beaded up and left alone for two months. the rest don't seem to want to join. so i guess i'll let them just do their thing and have some teensey dreads on my head.
