don't water it more than once a month in the winter so it will go dormant. keep it near a window but not so close to the window that it gets cold. you can cut and cause growth if you chop it 6 inches above the bottom, and new pups will grow out. if you take the top six inches of the plant and cut that off, you can place it upright in new soil and it will sprout roots like a whole new plant. make sure when you cut the knife is super sterile, otherwise you will be battling bacterial rot, and that stuff is a motherfucker.

FYI you will need to eat both those if you are planning to trip that cactus looks etiolated and weak. just leave the bottom stumps by the window so new pups can grow eventually.

so ide have to eaqt both? damn i was gonna cut one and let it grow.

now i have to leave six inches of cactus out of the dirt for it to grow back? say i cut them and left 5 or 6 in stubs, they will grow?

yes. pups will grow from the rooted stubs after the winter is over and they get more water and lots of sunlight.
or if you cut them at the base and cut a 6 inch section at the tip you can root it in good soil. personally i wouldn't brew those since they are so young, and may not contain much alkaloids yet. they look pretty too, in a few years with a big pot and a lot of sunshine those will be bangin. one might do the trick but then again it might be dissapointing, so if i had to cut them up i would do both. it wont kill the plant it will grow back probably with multiple pups. pups are so much fun to watch grow!

Omacatl. I've heard this term being used in reference to cacti several times. Would you mind elaborating a little more in regards to this specific cactus and why you say it looks like it is etiolated? If you dont mind, of course. I'm just curious as I'm quite new to the world of cacti, and I've never had much of a green thumb :(

And, Is it a dead end for the cactus potency wise? Or can it rebound after several seasons if replanted and taken care of properly?

i actually spelled that wrong:rolleyes:. its etoliated, and its when the cactus has grown thinner towards the top and warped in shape due to lack of light. those are only slightly etoliated, but that usually is a sign of a weak cactus IMO.

as far as potency goes its better to stick with much older mature plants to take cuttings from...at least 5-10 years old for decent mescaline content. the younger ones are no bueno for brewing.

Huh. Ok, thank you :). If I can pick your brain further...:

I have two san pedros growing on my porch. The new growth that has shown on the top of the cactus is almost an inch skinner in diameter than the rest of the cactus. It does not get skinner as you get the near the top, its just like the cactus has two sections... the old half that was already there when I got them, and then the extra six inches or so that has grown since then that is noticeably skinner. The new growth is also a darker green in color, whereas the bottom is more yellow green. They look nice, are growing straight up and not showing any other signs of problems that I can tell of. If you need a picture to understand better, I might be able to get one up in a day or two as I would need to borrow a digital camera first.

Would you consider that etoliated? And if so, by what you're saying, then I should consider moving it to a location where they might get more sunlight? They are both sharing the same pot, and definetly need to be repotted, but I am waiting until spring for that. I'm not so much worried about potency of the plant right now, rather, I plan to keep it alive and grow it out for many years before even considering taking any cuttings.

Thanks for your time, and sorry to jack the thread :)

yeah sounds like a typical lack of light causing the cactus to become skinnier at the top. you need to move them off your porch, either to direct sunlight or indoors to go dormant for the winter (if its too cold). its not really a problem for the cactus too much it just looks kinda ugly. the simple solution is to give it as much direct sunlight as possible...i see you are in california so hopefully where you are it isn't too cold.

if it becomes a problem and it keeps growing real skinny at the tip, you can cut the tip off and replant it to start on it's own, and new pups will grow from the cut you made in the original.

some are faster than others but 2 feet of growth for a pedro in a year ins't unheard of. peruvianus are the fastest IMO, those things rip- straight from seedlings to 6 inches in 2 months.

Ok. Thank you Omacatl. I greatly appreciate the advice. I did move it indoors already last night, because it was forecasted to drop just around freezing overnight for the first time this season. Early this morning it just got cold enough to freeze the early morning dew for an hour or so... sounds like as good of a time as any to bring it indoors and have it go dormant. Thanks again.

Sorry captaindreadlock. I should have started my own thread instead of polluting yours. You can have it back now.
