How often do you cut the lawn? Is this a chore, or is it a time to experience the microclimates on the property? I try to keep it down to one cut per month. The grass grows higher and healthier. The neighbors think I'm insane, but its all good fun. The local cats and birds love it! I try to let the existing grasses re-produce through self seeding. So plants that are habituated to the microclimate will reproduce there. I save money on purchasing seeds. I dont use any fertilizer or weed control, I'm 100 yards from Barnegat Bay and don't want to polute it. I dont care if the neighbors say the lawn is "ratty" To me is biological diversity. Also I save money not buying those chemicals. Mowing less leaves you more time to live, to do something like biking, boating or walking. Peace.
i love where you're coming from man. you've got a great perspective on the biological diversity thing. i personally enjoy mowing the lawn so i do it usually about twice a month, but that's not really all that often. i have time to do that and biking, boating and walking
i love it when the grass is tall and healthy, except unfortunately in arizona heat it's quite hard to get lush green grass anywhere i want to keep it cut once every one or two weeks (its fun )
Big props to you man. The neighbors are fools. My neighbors think I'm crazy too because I keep a veritable jungle of wild growth. Recently had to have a survey done because one decided bamboo was a weed and proceeded to cross the line chopping it all up. What is it with rednecks and their brushhog toys?
"Mowing less leaves you more time to live, to do something like biking, boating or walking." It also leaves you more time to post topics ABOUT the length of your lawn on the internet.
Weekly. But I live in the suburbs, so it's a small lawn, done in half an hour or so. If I wait longer, I'd have to mow it twice to get it all cut, doubling the time. I'd say it all equals out.
I couldn't agree with you more Piney, that's a great outlook. We cut our grass here maybe every two weeks. I know that sometimes it might not look the greatest to others, but I still think it's beautiful. I especially love being barefoot in it.
in the towns around here you have to mow your lawn or you get a fine and they have someone mow it for you and you have to pay for it. so you dont have much of a choice.
We usually keep it around every two to three weeks or so... we just don't want snakes around. We live a few hundred yards from a swamp, so there's always the chance of Cottonmouths...
d/k if this would work as to the size or if gas $ would equal out with cost of salt but: an old trick for snakes is creating a salt strip about 2" wide around wherever you don't want the snakes. Cottonmouths intake 02 and moisture through their tongues while roaming the grass, hit the salt, turn around. It doesn't hurt them, just redirects. I d/k how practical that would be on a larger scale, just wanted to throw that out there.
I love to let the grass grow long, but every once in a while I love to smell that fresh cut grass....
