so we stumbled across a video of indoor growing the other day and after watching it i have a question..

i think i have read that ya veg under blue spectrums and flower under red. however in this video the guy was all about flowering under blue spectrum lights..

just for my own curiosity could someone clarify this for me??

The metal halide (blue light) simulates the spring sun giving a great vegetative spectrum. While the high pressure sodium (red spectrum) is more of a harvest sun for flowering. There is a wavelength chart somewhere showing the two lamps vs. what the plant needs.

As you said the MH for veg and HPS for flowering. However, using a metal halide (blue) in flowering does allow for a nice tight nodal spacing (and a more leafy bud IMO). I think they refer to it as the "leaf per calyx" ratio.

Both lamps have their plusses and minuses and it really boils down to what the grower is comfortable with. A mix of the two is nice. Some growers even use HPS for vegging (more lumens per watt).

he was using a hps with a blue spectrum.. at least that is what he kept saying..

it was really a informative video for a beginners guide(a little to basic for me) to setting up a grow room except for that one little thing he kept harping on..

so that being said,, ive never even heard of a blue spectrum HPS bulb,, do they make such a thing?

heres a link to the video,,

I've seen "I Grow Chronic" before nice video (helluva link btw) :).

You can get HPS bulbs that have had the spectrum tweaked towards one way or another. They are a bit more $$ and IMO not worth the money as opposed to a standard spectrum bulb that is fresh. I'll try and dig up a spectrum link - might be in the MJ Guide.

<edit> I forgot you can just buy a conversion bulb for your HPS to run a MH bulb.

lol i fixed the link,,it was a doozie wasnt it...

i appreciate you clarifying all this.. i dont grow anymore due to a close call (detectives sitting in my yard waiting on a warrant for 2 hours before they went on there way cause noone could get in touch with a judge) however i have no problem tryin to give folks tips on growing from what i remember (its been 8 years or so) and that video just confused the hell out of me ..

No problem my man and I understand your situation. It seemed if you even whispered the word "marij...." the police were swarming your place. Land of the free....

For those that haven't seen it "I Grow Chronic" is a good video for a grow room setup. If you ever wondered about dripper systems and ebb & flow this will show you what is needed and how its done.

there is something to be said for "know your rights".. if my ex wife wouldnt have had sense enough not to let them in the house without a warrant i would quite possibly still be in prison today. (due to the extenuating circumstances that they had reason to believe i was growing, they could have had a list of charges a mile long)

everyone should remember, NO MATTER WHAT, NEVER allow a law enforcement officer in your house without a warrant..
    NEVER!!!!

that was a helluva a day.. a lotta good weed went up in flames in the wood stove shortly after they vacated the premises ...

Just a quicky is there any difference in the light spectrum between low pressure and high pressure sodium(hps)?. Low pressure is more a tube type construction with an orange glow.

Ok thanks will check link out. They do work low pressure sodium just thought with the orange light they give off would be slightly more towards the red side of the spectrum.

    Here's the spectral analysis of three different lights, one is HPS another is MH and the last is Hortilux's new HPS blue w/ both;

Remember though that you are using a 1K HPS and there is a point where the amount of light absorbed is near maximized (diminishing returns sets in). Then you need a bit of supplemental co2 to get over the wall so to speak. I cannot remember the light value of the wall though.

When bulb shopping I did shudder at the $$$$ of the tweaked bulbs :)

BB, So far haven't had much probs with CO2 'cause the rooms are vented to the outdoors and several neighbors have fireplaces so no matter which way the wind blows still gets lot's of Co2=>D

Rock, It's the end of the month and don't get paid till the 3rd of next month:>(
