I wanted to bring to your attention some common practices in farming and what your opinion or solution to them would be. I saw a particulary disturbing video of what an exterminator does in soybean fields (other crops as well). The exterminator was a sharpshooter and was shooting gophers as they emerged from their holes in the ground. He also shot and killed all the foxes that ventured into the field (and any other animals as well). It was a lot dead animals for one soybean field. Most vegetarians are probably not aware that this type of thing happens, regularlly. As good as one tries to be, animals are still losing their lives because of us. What can be done to change this.
Well, if a person is a vegetarian because they disagree with the idea of killing animals and lot of animals are being killed in soybean farming operations (and other crops) then I would think it is a issue. I just wanted to bring it to peoples attention because I don't think most people are aware of it. I have not come across any packaging information labels on vegetables to say that it was raised in an animal friendly manner, if it doesn't say something like that, it probably wasn't.
The term organic has nothing to do with wether animals are killed or not, just how. If I was a farmer and went out and beat so-called pest animals with a club it is legally organic farming, but not organic if I used some type of chemical pesticide/rodenticide.
^But even then insects would be killed no? It's just that Vegan = 100,000,000 million insects killed in fields and transporting the food vs. Meat eating = 30 cows + 300,000,000 million insects killed. Simply 'damage control' isn't it? It's not possible to go through life and not kill anything even if it's unintentional. If your pets have fleas and you try all passive methods of getting rid of them , say with vacuum cleaners and lavender oils, but it doesn't work you'll have to resort to chemicals to kill the fleas. Or you can not and let your pets, your guests and your family suffer and possibly get infected bites and diseases from them. Point is other living beings are going to die and suffer, but we have the choice to reduce some of that death and suffering. And if you are getting a balanced veggie/vegan diet then it's better for the individual too.
usually carnivores are killed as a matter of course in livestock areas. Sadly, offing the coyote or fox leaves the gophers and prairie gogs and what have you with fewer predators. BINGO! population explosion.
