No fans spin, no "beeps", no nothing?
First, is it a laptop or desktop?
If a desktop check the back of the power supply for any type of reset button, a few have internal safety circuits. Also check any surge suppressors or such that your system is plugged into.
If it isn't any of those, then most likely it is a dead motherboard, dead CPU (processor) or dead power supply.
If it were a component like video, memory, etc, you would get a series of beeps when it boots up; post codes, that can tell you what is wrong.

Sadly when it is something like that, the only way to tell is to test individual components, but I'm guessing you don't have the set-up to do such testing.

If I had your system in front of me I could tell you what's up within 5 minutes, but online it's much harder to diagnose.

Have you checked the manufacture's website?

The CPU chip itself shouldn't make any sound!;)

Get a mulimeter to test the power supply. Jump the green wire on the mobo connector to one of the black grounds near it with some kind of wire a paper clip will do. That should star the PSU and you should hear the PSU, then check all your voltages with the multimeter. Put it on DC volts and stick the negative test lead in ground and test each voltage one bu one with the positive lead of you meter.

Ace, I know you mean well, but if the OP had the equipment and knowledge to do what you suggest, I doubt he would be posting for advice in here.

But solid advise none the less :2thumbsup:

It sounds like a custom built gamer pc, probably from some place like Alienware or similar company.
If that is the case, OP should check with the manufacturer to see if it is under warranty before trying to open it up and voiding any warranties. ;)

    Smokenmirros, Who made your system?

just off the top of my ass,
if the power supply fan spins up, and any other fans directly connected to the power supply, then it is MOBO or CPU.
If fans connected via the motherboard also spin up, most likely dead CPU.

A guy from Paducah ky built it himself. I bought it from him while living there. The led lights are all that respond to turning it on. No fans, nothing else. I found that a tab had broken off the plastic piece that secures the processor and heat sink. The metal device that clamps the processor in place was hanging free but everything was still in place. I'm repairing that piece so it will never break again. Pushed every reset I could find.

I'm betting it's the mobo, t can't really say without seein a pic or something but usually a dead CPU the mobo will still come on but it won't post, it'll flash an error code or beep a number of times

I guess you know I'm talking about a desktop. I assumed a reset was all it needed because it did absolutely nothing. It has a card reader that monitors temps throughout the unit. What could cause everything to be unresponsive?

I'm away from home doing a tile job. I'll be home Thursday and will post a pic of the beast. You folks have convinced me it's either the mobo or power supply. Thanks for your advice. Ever get baffled on a home repair holler.

You should see if you can get another power supply and try it, but if the heat sink came off the cpu, then you may have a fried cpu, but as Ace mentioned, you should then get a POST code at least. (I think a continuous beep is a cpu problem)

Can you tell us the make and model # of the motherboard, should be printed on it.
Then you can check the website and get specifics about the MOBO.

I must be simpler than the process for posting a pic of my computer using this phone. I guess I need a computer to fix one. I think I could attach one to an email if one of the smarter than I couldpeople would provide one. Regardless, thanks for your helpfullness.

I ordered a new mobo, processor and power supply. The old processor had a small section of bent pins. I tried inserting a second processor and while attemting to plug it in, I noticed excessive resistance. I pushed the bitch in and bent the pins on it in much the same way. Evidently the socket has an obstruction issue. I'm thinking the mobo is permanently unserviceable. Has anyone dealt with such a friggin problem?

ZiF SOCKET....lift the metal handle first. Some Intel Chips just have pads....the pins are on the mobo , all AMD chips tho have pins on the CPU package.

I have had ChiPS with bent pins that I straightened out, so cross UR fingers...reset the CMOS chip and hope it will POST (or remove and reinsert the CMOS battery after 30 seconds or so...looks like a watch battery)...else it will give u a code in beeps, or on a 7-segment LCD On the mobo itself

The socket bends the pins on the cpu with the lever up, tried a different processor with same result. Must be a socket problem and I'm guessing unfixable being the pos is plastic

I didn't know that was the procedure. That's why the drop kick didn't work.

Clear uR CMOS chip(jumper in the mobo or remove and the replace the CMOS coin battery)

Get the pins straight as u can so they will go in the socket (be fucking careful). The chip package is made to fit into the socket only in the correct orientation (rotation). The chip and socket will have a mark on the corner to help you get the orientation right.

Set the chip on the socket, then lift the bar. The chip should fall neatly into the socket but if the pins are bent it may take some force (just a little, get the pins as straight as u can but don't break the chip)

When the chip is seated in the socket pull the bar back down and latch it. This will require some force...it's okay here it's just spring tension that holds the CPU package firmly mated with the socket.

Then put some thermal paste on and a heatsink cooler. If it does get past POST then u can go back and do a better job with the thermal paste.

Years ago I've ripped a computer apart with my hands before cuz i was tripping back when I used to smoke ice and had amphetamine psychosis I thought the CPU was a bomb cuz the chip said something like "defused in Germany" or some shit lol.i think I threw that shit far away from me cuz I thought it was a bomb..and I "knew" there were miicrophones and cameras hidden in that case lol. I just ripped it out heatsink cooler attached and all.

Well I did come to my senses later and reassembled the machine on the floor, no case just the board and drives hooked up with cables and shit. I was able to get the CPU back in the socket after carefully straightening some pins. It worked so I deleted all partitions and zeroed the whole disk and made new partitions. That machine acted weird as fuck tho after that cuz I really fucked with the OS cuz I was so paranoid the computer would show me things and take me to different places by clicking in certain places and pressing different keys in particular order. That shit tripped me out but I my mind was so gone from amphetamine psychosis that I was editing the config to do that shit and didn't realize it and thought the cops put a virus, or a backdoor into my OS but i really did all that shit myself to make it act like that lol I was so scared that I was gonna be framed some kind of huge fraud case lol and get 20-life...it still did some things I can't explain to this day crazy ass shit but I must have fucked with it to make it do that shit. (Like it would take me right to someone's Facebook account and the I could bets inside their account and dig thru their connections and some of these people had alternate hidden accounts. I defaced this one chicks face book account and put my own banner on her so anyone who went to her FB wall would see then pwned image and I could talk to her friends as her....someone told me to do this to get information cuz we were so paranoid lol. I made it to where she knew it was me but couldn't prove it to anyone else. I locked her out of the account so she couldn't log in. She said she called the "cyber police" on me (as if there is such a thing) and she finally did get her account back and fixed.

That's why I haven't done meth for years, and dont wanna touch that shit again.
