so I'm going to see a counseler tommarow, voluntarily because Ive been deppressed and have been haivng bad axiety thats been messing with just about everything I'm trying to do now. At first the thought of seeing a counseler didnt sound good to me I thought I could figure my problems out on my own but it hasn it really worked adn I gota do something.

So I'm just wondering if any one who has seen one can tell me what to expect? I'm hoping they don't try to put me on meds or anything because I hear antidepressents really fuck with you and some people are never the same, but who knows.

Thanks for any help in advanced.

They can never force you onto medications unless you are under-aged or suicidal. If you are just going to see a counselor, not a psychologist of psychiatrist, you will most likely just talk. Counselors cannot legally prescribe meds but they might refer you to a doctor or psych that can prescribe if they feel it's needed.

    No, it really isn't.

But... I have clinical (and going on manic, at times...) depression. I refused meds and prefer to treat myself with medicinal marihuana.

What Stella said; counsellors are neither qualified to distribute medication, or to ofer any real solutions to your problems. It is just basic talk therapy. Therefore, you may find it is not particularly effective; it rather depends on the cause of your depression. If it is a long term thing, you will have far better results from appointments with a psychotherapist, and you may find cogniitive behavioural therapy very beneficial.

Don't ever be afraid to admit you cannot fix this yourself; depression is a debilitating illness, and is bigger than all of us. Admitting you need help is not a sign of weakness; in fact, it takes a far braver individual to admit they need help, and to start going about getting it, than it does to just continue to wallow in your self-pity. You are doing a brave thing; this could be the first step of the rest of your life...

As for medication, that is entirely up to you, but a decent psych will talk you through all the pros and cons. Don't believe all you hear about SSRIs; yes, there are potential side effects (as with any medicine), but that isn't to say you will have a bad reaction. The only real way to know is to try. You will only be put on a low dose to begin with, anyway, maybe around 20mg.

From a personal POV, I have been where you are now, when I was around your age, so I know completely what you are feeling... I got through it, and learned to live with it in the back of my mind, and you can, too. In fact, I learned so much in therapy, it was what made me want to work in mental health, myself.

Feel free to PM me with any questions, and lots of luck :)

I see no problems going to a counselor, I was never to one myself, but I know my mom and dad had both been to counselors before. Its good that youre willing to do it with an open mind and all.

yeah, antidepressants freak me out, I dont think Id ever take them, but then again Ive never been really truely depressed.
If you really want antidepressants, try weed, I mean I know you smoke. ButN I dont think id step a foot past weed for antidepressants.

Good luck man, I hope you get something from this.

I've never been to counseling because I'm not to open with sharing my feelings with other people.. but I mean it could be a good idea for you.. it just depends on the type of person you are! I'm sure a counselor would help you out a lot.

and yeah i'm not a fan of anti-depressants either. my mom has wanted to put me on them for some time, but i'd rather stick to marijuana cause shit, its the cure for just about everything. lol

but good luck with the counseling! hope it goes good for ya

Correct; only seen to be effective thus far in attention deficit type disorders. Odd, but true...

Same here, with my condition (BPD); it doesn't work for everyone - in fact, some people get far worse on cannabis, and I wouldn't resommend it to anyone that hasn't already tried other options - but it works for me, like no other psych med ever has.

While I have access to the stuff, and while I remain sure it is not adding to my problems, I'd sooner do that than take a benzo.... The pills the pdoc wants me on are riddled with unpleasant side-effects.

First off, if you're having major anxiety issues, then don't see a councilor. They are shit, and I've been to a lot of them and never helped me. Go to a real psycitrist(sp) and he might subscribe you meds, but they are worth it. I'm taking 20 mg of prozac and it's honestly clearing all of my anxiety and depression.

Yeah, counselors don't do much besides pat you on the back... whereas shrinks try to make you do exercises and take drugs.

i went to shrink and he never made me do exercises or take drugs but then again i wasnt honest with him and lied alot to get out of there.

But i guess you can expect it to be awkard at first at least it was for me but then again i was going against my will.

Hope the person can help you get your shit figured out. Good luck
