this is kind of dumb but i just have to say it.

well i want to be an artist but i'm not sure if i really have the talent.
i couldn't imagine doing anything else with my life.
i feel so much at peace and in my own little world when im drawing or painting etc.
i have so much passion but not as much talent as a lot of other people.
so i don't know, but i guess im trying to ask, do you think that you're just born with that talent or do you learn it?
and how would you learn it; i mean it seems kind of weird to "learn how to draw."
feedback would be very much appreciated.

It all depends on what you want to do, really. Working on a computer with art could lannd you in graphic design, web design, and advertising. Traditional methods will land you in concept design or illustration. Though, really, it's really open. My suggestion is to draw every day, all day, things from life. Draw what you see. Study shadows, highlights, how cloth folds, colors, and HUMAN ANANTOMY. Knowing the basics is vital to developing a style. Post some pics and I'll try to help you out some.

katiechameleon, just do it ! This is how you learn - by doing - and just don't stop learning. Passion is your best talent.

And don't make it a contest ... if you want, there are always others who seem way ahead, and so much better and if you want, there's plenty of reason to stop any time. But also there's always plenty of reason to go on, and sometimes it is just because, and in spite of everything else. Just don't limit yourself ... write, play music, dance ... be creative in any way you can imagine.

    :)

I agree, passion always reflects in a piece of art, doesn't matter of what "level" it is!
And passion, to me, equals beauty. Also, your skills will improve very soon if you just keep on going :)

This is great advice definitely. Just do it, you will learn and you will get better if you are open minded. Sometimes I don't feel like I have the talent to create the things I wanna create but I realize I just have to do it. And I have seen myself improve to my surprise! So if it makes you feel good, then do it, and if someone doesn't like it that shouldn't matter.

In my opinion (and I'm sure others will agree), you don't have to be "good" at drawing or painting to be an artist. Enjoying it is enough. Being passionate about art is what makes you an artist. Just because you don't make things look even slightly realistic doesn't mean you don't have talent. Look at Pablo Picasso or Vincent Van Gogh. They were (and are) very popular artists, but a lot of their work looks like a preschooler's work. And there are other popular artists whose work wasn't that wonderful, such as Monet (from far away, his work looked amazing, but up close, it just looked like a bunch of paint splatters) or Gauguin (his work is decent but does not look as realistic as, say, Bob Ross' work). Or check out the work of Henri Matisse. His work is more cartoon-like. If you want to make your work look more natural/realistic, it doesn't hurt to take an art class or check out "how-to" books from the library, but I personally prefer doing things my own way, in my own style. I'm currently working on selling some of my own work. Another thing you can do is look on Ebay under the art category and look for original art being offered for bid by the artist, not by a third party, and see what kind of stuff is selling on there. You'd be surprised; some people selling their own work on Ebay have sold their work for a lot more than you'd think it would be worth just looking at it. In short.... "If it feels good, do it!"

good art is not neccesarily representative. good art evokes the passion of the artist. if you want to be an artist, and you truely love it, that's all the talent you need. your art will be beautiful. i'd love to see some of your work!

no one is born with "talent". everyone is born with certain soul deep inclinations that are totally unique to themselves as individuals. but not tallent in them. THAT comes from the practice that is motivated by those uniquely individual inclinations. the love and passion each of us have for them.

so yes, anyone and everyone not only CAN 'become' an 'artist' but each of us IS, each in our own unique ways.

i don't know about good and bad either. i mean i know that if something is just careless and sloppy and has nothing else to it, most people aren't going to find a whole lot of point to it. beyond that though, and even not very much beyond that at all, the whole judgement thing becomes highly subjective.

and i've certaily seen a lot of things highly praised that just appear careless and sloppy to me, while at the same time, many things i find the most interesting get condemed, trivialized or ignored.

and i think that's the same for everybody and about DIFFERENT specific things for each and every one of everybody too.

I am gifted as a sculptor and I can draw well… But I reckon that it is matter of a trade… Art comes out of your mind and out of your heart!
Living a life is the greatest art there is…
Just imagine, be creative and you’ll find your place somewhere

Fuck being good enough, your an artist. Every single person on this earth is an artist whether they express it through drawing, painting, sculpting, singing, speaking, thinking, anything. We are all here to grace each other with our talents.
