cotton thread problems about sewing

I have known that it is best to use all cotton thread for piecing patchwork. The only problem is, I don't seem to get on with cotton thread at all!! Whenever I use it, it goes very curly and seems to break much more easily than my all purpose polyester. What am I doing wrong?
