Everyone always seems to assume that because I am vegan, and eat mainly organic foods that my grocery bill is high..But, for a trip to the grocery store to get about 2 weeks worth of food, I never even spend over 60-70 American dollars... I see people getting their groceries rung up in front of me...junk food, frozen pizzas, ice cream bars, etc. and their carts half as full as mine, with way higher grocery bills [not that I try to stare or anything..] Yes, organic veggies and such are more expensive than the regular produce, but almost no one that I know or have seen at a grocery store has a cart full of veggies anyway. [Not in the U.S. lol] Just wondering if any fellow veggies/vegans DO find the foods you eat to be high in price? Maybe, I just go to a cheap store ...but somehow people think I rack up a huge grocery bill when I dont...
I get the same thing....and my grocery bills aren't unusually high either. I guess it would be possible (and quite easy) to buy all sorts of expensive vegetarian foods....I don't though. From what I've seen, the most expensive vegetarian food is the substitutes for 'normal' food. I try to avoid those, though, because most of them seem too processed. I'll occasionally buy boca burgers so I'll have something to eat similar to what my family's eating when they have burgers, but don't eat 'fake meat' otherwise. I think the way to keep grocery bills down (and this applies to all people, not just veggies/vegans) is to buy in bulk and prepare the food yourself. It's cheaper to buy dried beans and rice in bulk and spices and prepare the dish yourself than to buy it premade in a can. Also, the grocery store is not the place to buy fruits and vegetables. I go to the farmers market every week, and it's cheaper (and better) than the grocery store.
My grocery bills go up because I see impulse items, usually. Here's a cool vegan on a budget link that I have posted before. http://www.vegsandiego.com/veg/8/Veganism_on_a_Budget.htm
I have been known to spend a lot of money on groceries. However, I purchase almost exclusively organic, and I purchase a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables. I also purchase a lot of impulse items. Lately, I've been working on reducing my grocery bill, so I've been purchasing a lot of stuff on sale at the supermarkets. If I wasn't so picky, I could easily shop Vegan way cheaper than I was ever able to shop as an omni.
I really think it comes down to pantry management. I need staples x, y and z I need condiments g, l and m, and so on. know what you have, get what you need and build in a tiny amount of wiggle room.
I think I can live off 25 Euros a week if I have to. But If I buy organic readymade stuff, then if can become a lot more. But I usually don't buy that, for financial reasons.
hi everyone im from england and i find buying organic dan be very expensive ....i have 7 children so its a lot of mouths to feed.......... but you know where i come from there are a lot of hunters and bieng veggie tends to get frowned upon which is sad in an age where meat is a non essential you can get all your nutrients etc from other foods any way .if i pop into a cafe where i live and ask for a veggie or vegan dish it can cause silence its sheer madness......so cafes are a no go
I think a lot of it is the premade dishes that get expensive, and the fake meats too... When my fiancee and I go shopping together his stuff ends up costing more, because he likes to buy a lot of premade frozen things [jalepeno poppers, mozzerella sticks, etc.] and I dont... I get a lot of rice and veggies for the most part
