I almost had to get it for the title alone! I have Isa Chandra Moskowitz's last two books, and I would say that I'm a bit of a fan, but if I'm shelling out >$20, you'd better deliver. Veganomicon does deliver. For the newbie, there is a pretty good pantry 101 bit, and no lecturing on why be vegan. Nope, just get to the food, the gadget list and the names and quick how-tos for knife skillz. The recipies are not dependent on mock anything, and not all soy/ seitan either. It's real food you find at (gasp) a grocery store. Sure, her grocery is in the most ethnicly diverse city in the ever-lovin' world, but hey. Tomorrow is my first adventure with a recipe, and I'm going simple with samosa stuffed baked potates. (samosas without frying? I'm so there.) I had a great time just reading the book.
I've eaten 20 recipes out of my Veganomicon, and I have yet to prepare anything I didn't love, even the recipes that sounded gross at first glance. Almost everything was easier to create than the ingredient lists might indicate, and many recipes can be prepared from ingredients that I can purchase at Winco. In short, I LOVE this cookbook.
I've borrowed her other book Vegan with a Vengence from a friend and made a few meals from the recipes. I like that she isn't preachy and uses ingredients that can be found at most grocery stores. I'll definately have to check out Veganomicon.
drumminmama, does this statement~"Tomorrow is my first adventure with a recipe" mean that u never usually use a recipe? WOW! sometimes my brain just isn't creative enough to make a meal without a recipe.
