    Hello there!

I really need some help as recently I'm permenantly knackered. I get enough sleep and I eat right so I don't understand it. I'm physically tired and mentally I'm just plain slow. My doctor told me a while ago I was lacking in iron so I was taking tablets for two months, it didn't really help so I stopped taking it so I don't think it's that. Does anyone know what could be causing this? Or anything that could help? I'm failing everything in school because I can't really function anymore so I need to deal with it asap.
    Help!

Peace and love to you all.

You should see your doctor again and look for other possible causes of your fatigue. Since fatigue is a common symptom of many illnesses it can be very hard to diagnose it without other symptoms. I have a feeling you're going to have to go through a lot of trial and error before you find out what's wrong.

I too get that same kind of tired feeling to where it's difficult to function, but it's do to my chronic migraines which are accompanied by a fever. So I take prescription meds that don't really work and drink lots of green/ginseng/camomile tea. I also take those multi-vitamin tablets with iron. The tea seems to work wonders for getting my energy back, but it might not work for you. Just depends.

As with coping with your fatigue, try to prioritize your schedule so that you get that most important stuff done first. Also do things in small steps, not all at once. Like if you had to clean your room and it was an absolute mess you divide it into sections, do this corner now, that corner 2 hours later, and so on...

    Hope this helps.

Obvious reasons aside (lack of sleep, lots of stress, overworked), lack of iron makes me think of low protein intake. What's your diet like? Low iron may have been secondary to low protein intake...

Maybe low iron also reflected some other sort of anemia? But that's something really a doc would have to help you figure out.
Other common reasons for tiredness could include Mono, in which case it's just an illness that you have to wait. But yeah, lots of possibilities out there...

Ask for your B12 levels to be checked also. If these levels are off then your body wont's absorb much anyway, no matter what you do to your diet. A lack of Vit B 12 in the system can also cause mood swings as well as tiredness. If you are veggie then lack of B12 could be a reason. One thing I know will get your energy levels up is the enzyme glutamine. Go back to your doctor and ask for another blood test. They are usually done every 12 weeks in the cases of anaemia etc.

ok yeah suppose it could be anything. I am vegan so I guess I should pay close attention to that protein/iron. I think I'll try some vit B12 for a while and hope that'll help. If not I better march my butt over to the doc. I'll try that ginseng tea in the meantime.

    Thanks. [IMG]

Yeah, on a vegan diet, you really need to get a lot of attention to getting required nutrients. So yeah, a daily multivitamin could be a good idea just to cover all the bases, and see if you can boost your protein intake a bit.

Also try a plant based liquid iron suppliment like Floradix. Slow cold pressed hemp seed oil is also a great food suppliment and black seed oil will help to balance your system out. Hemp Foods For You is based in the UK and hemp is a great protein source. I think they mail order - put them in a search engine. All their products are vegan friendly. For the vit B12, try an organic algae like Upper Klamath Algae. I used this when I had a vit B12 problem and it was great. I still take it.

B vitamins assist energy functions in your body.. and many of them are found in meat and animal products so yeah if you're vegan this could be it definitely. Carbs also give you energy so see if you get enough of those.
It really could be a lot of things but since you're vegan it is likely to be from a lack of B vitamins.

    Hi Oceanstar!

    You menioned that you're vegan.

Do you eat a lot of soy protein? If so - try cutting it out for a month (ALL of it). Get protein from nuts, combination meals - that kind of thing.

See if your energy improves. Sometimes soy protein can interfere with thyroid hormone - making a person groggy, fatigued, like they are walking thorugh peanut butter.

If your energy does improve - try adding a serving of soy a day - see how you feel. If you still feel good, add another serving. Basically do that until you hit a spot where you start to feel fatigued again - then back down to the serving previous.

This includes soy milk (I LOVE rice and almond milk), soy meat, soy eggs, soy cheese - everything.

I would also suggest B12 shots if your B12 is VERY low. I had to take them for months - now I just guzzle liquid B and it works great!

That is my suggestion - add it to the list!

    :)

i dont think i had as severe symptoms as you did, but i did find myself having a super lack of energy and such. try going for a 10 minute jog, and make sure to push yourself really hard for the last part of it. walk it off and you should feel great. it was that first time i felt a runners high as they call it. its awesome. i sleep WAY better and find my mood is overall just improved. wouldnt hurt to try right?

Before I read that you are vegan, I was thinking it was probably a dietary issue. Do you consume lots of wheat? If so, stop. But do it gradually, because most people are addicted to it and will experience withdrawal symptoms from cutting it from their diets too fast. A good magnesium supplement might help tremendously, it will likely improve the quality of your sleep. Most humans do not fare well on a vegan diet for very long, it's just our biology. We evolved eating meat. We can get the proper nutrients from other sources, but you have to be diligent about it, and you have to eat a very wide variety of different things. If there's any one thing you eat a lot of, try cutting back and substituting new things and see if that doesn't help.

I have anemia and it takes a long time to build your iron back up. Took me a few months. Also, if you get iron pills with folic acid and b vitamins it helps your body absorb the iron better. I still have low iron but no more anemia. I take these vitamins called blood builders. they are food derived so your body can actually process them. Let me see if I can find a link.
