I've been thinking a lot lately about becoming Amish. I don't know of any Amish communities in the state I am in so I would have to move to Pennsylvania or something. I am so sick of society today. Anyone have any advice? It would be pretty easy to move and I could get most things like my Tv, xbox, clothing, in my car. Probbably just sell my bed and dresser n stuf... Any thoughts on this?

I am not sure that you are allowed the TV in Amish terriitory. It is very strict. Documentary I saw....children were not even allowed to have dolls...only rag dolls with no faces on them.

while i don't believe in their religious basis, the idea of minimizing dependence on any thing you can't make or maintain yourself, isn't entirely a bad one.

(i'd just prefer to be able to make and maintain machines to do the heavy lifting)

you've got to understand though, that even if one person could understand everything they wanted to be able to use and take for granted existing, no one person alone could create or maintain all of it. of course you COULD live without most of these things. most people just don't visualize far enough to be entirely certain how much they would.

what i think is important as that the infrastructure most of us take for granted, could, and sooner or later will have to, exist without any dependence on oil, coal or uranium.

i would certainly rather see solar powered narrow gauge railways then petrolium powered automobiles.

and the whole financial/credit 'industry' is a self mostly a scam and a serving circle jerk

and the land shouldn't be owned exclusively by humans, nor everything have to be owned, and represented by symbolic value.

You should instead join the Shakers. There is only 1 original member left. They could really really really use the converts. I bet they'll be a bit more flexible.

Lots of Mennonites around here and Amish to the north, south, east, and west.
    They're Anabaptist ya know.

Their buggies are a pain in the ass when on the roadway.

A guy I worked with was Mennonite. Nice guy. His church was pretty normal, he had a souped up 'Cuda when young...you'd never know he was Mennonite.

You're probably thinking of old order Mennonites and Amish.

Then there are the black bumper Mennonites. They have cars but paint them all black, included the chrome. Don't see much of them anymore, they appear to have gone to vans. Some drive them, some don't drive so they hire people to drive them around. They'll show up a Good Will or a grocery store with three of four women and a bunch of kids and haul out boxes of stuff.

Then you have the buggy churches.

My wife worked in the health field and dealt with the Amish. They'd buy prescription drugs with cash and store them in the barn. Barns are allowed to have electric, but not the houses. Same with phones, they'd have to use the phone in the barn.
They don't get Social Security by the way.

    Different sects have different "rules".

You need an appropriate hat . Things roll from there ... hang out at the local grocery store and speak
    with your eyes .

Why not start your own Amish community that way you don’t have to relocate?

Also the Amish often have all of their teeth removed in favor of dentures, even If their teeth are healthy and cavity free – hope you have a good dentist.
