So I was downstairs making some lunch today when I noticed the newspaper on the counter with this headline: "Parents wary of Obama's message to students" The pull quote (that is the quote taken from inside the story, blown up to large font and placed next to the story like a picture) says: "I'm very conservative, and what I'm hearing is this is going to be what can you do for President Obama. It feels like Hitler's Germany to me or like we're living in Cuba." - Amy Riecken, 31, whose two sons attent Imagine MASTer Academy.:rofl::rofl::rofl: Even better is this excerpt: "Fort Wayne Community Schools spokeswoman Krista Stockman said district officials have taken hundreds of phone calls from parents, concerned that Obama's speech will deal with everything from making their children his servants to swine flu to recruiting children to work for the census." Now I'm not a huge fan of Obama myself- I kind of fall into the "lessor of two evils" school of thought on this one. But it seems like conservatives are really grapsing at straws since Obama's election. Except there aren't even any straws left. One must wonder - why are conservatives going to such silly lengths to try and discredit Obama? Almost all of their attempts to discredit him are based on misinformation and unjustified paranoia. Like with the healthcare issue where they wanted us to believe that Obama's health plan was equivalent to genocide, as one particularly poignant example. I think I know the answer. Conservatives won't admit it because it would discredit them far more than all of their silly behavior since Obama's election, so they're making up any and every possible fictional story to discredit Obama that they can crank out. What is really pushing all this? I contend that it's Obama's skin color. This shit never happened to Clinton - sure, he got his share of bad media generated by conservatives, but that was at least based on things he actually did (even if the things he did were rather trivial.) And Clinton just wasn't demonized nearly as much as Obama is now. Something a friend said sums it up well, I think - "If his name was Larry Jones none of this would be happening." For some background, I'm living in Fort Wayne Indiana right now. IT is the second largest city in the state behind Indianapolis but is overwhelmingly conservative. This town also won an award in Men's Health or Maxim or some magazine like that for being the dumbest city in the country - the decision was based on various criteria like number of people with degrees, number of colleges, etc. I can vouch for the stupidity of the people here having lived most of my life in the city. The article I was referring to was from the Fort WAyne Journal Gazette. The article,I think, also vouches for the lack of intelligence here. How the hell do you take a situation where the president is going to talk to school children and extrapolate it into the president being like Hitler? No seriously, am I missing something? Did hitler address school children? Or is this, as I expect, just lots of paranoia and insanity?
Since when was it illegal or dispicable for our president to address our school age children? Since a black man was elected? Is that the problem? No you aren't missing anything. The other side is trying to deny that they lost the election. And it amounts to paranoia and hysteria. But they think if they are angrier and louder they will be heard and the rest of us will be ignored. And media is feeding their hysteria.
Amazing isn't it? Our last president stood up and said we were going to get BIn Laden dead or alive, and we were going to smoke him out. We never questioned when he decided Bin Laden wasn't the bad guy. But now republicans don't even want our president to speak to our children on staying in school? Why exactly is that?
I, too find this perplexing, but have come to the conclusion that the ultra conservative crowd is just mean spirited...because they have nothing else to hang their hats on. They exert influence over the dumb and uninformed with their endless diatribes about Obama being a Socialist, etc. etc. etc. They are, however, hard to ignore as they are everywhere and know how to gain publicity for themselves. My blood boils when I read something like was posted above.
AMEN to all you guys. What is the matter with these people. Obama might motivate some kids to make it in this world. I agree - if he was white it would not be an issue.
That's what they want they want you to get riled up about/ Thing is let them raise their redkneck children how they will. But don't ever stoop to accept their lower standards as those the rest of us should accept.
Nobody gives a fuck about Obama's skin colour. Pretending they do is just a convenient way of ignoring his actual failings, by blaming any criticism on racism.
The conservatives just want our children to stay dumb, so it's easier to run the country and so we will have enough stupid adults to do the service jobs and populate the prisons. They want a nation of Sarah Palins, more or less. What is the big deal with listening to a president's speech? I mean, we had to listen to senile Olde Ronnie in the 80s and Captain Coo Coo Bananas in the 00s, so let us listen to someone who can actually make a speech. And for those who think that Obama's speech will automatically make their kids socialist, gay-marriage supporting, pot-smokin', latte-drinkin' liberals, you're fucking stupid. I had to listen to speeches made by Hitler in high school. Did it turn me into a Nazi? NO. I've read The Communist Manifesto. Did that turn me into a communist? NO. Does it make me informed about the world around me, and let me form my own decisions and opinions? YES. So make your speech, Obama. And maybe these kids will grow up to be something great, rather than turning into their parents.
I said in my post I'm not exactly a huge Obama fan myself. I'm not trying to defend the guy because I think he's great or something, because I certainly don't. Some of his decisions since taking office have not been to my liking at all. However there is a huge chasm between Obama's actual failings and the silly paranoid fears and amazingly innaccurate "facts" that many conservatives are choosing to hate Obama for. There are plenty of very real and very obvious reasons to dislike Obama - but for the most part they are not outside of the realm of normal politician behavior. That doesn't excuse them, but since these things are more or less universal, conservatives need more fuel for their hatred and fear. I came to the conclusion that people were doing this to Obama because he is black because I could think of no other reason that they would keep coming up with this ludicrous ideas about what Obama is trying to do. However, another idea has occured to me since my first posting - that is that Bush was such a horrible failure, a joke of a president, and who was actually heavily involved in questionable government activities, and these facts were widely publicised and (rightly) used against the Bush administration, and those conservatives who blindly stayed behind him through all of this can only justify their continuing allegiance to such a sad and disgusting set of ideals (by that I mean Bush administration ideals, not conservative ideals in general) by making the "other side" (because these peoples' minds would pop if they knew there could be more than two sides to any issue) appear just as bad or worse. I apologize if that last sentence is difficult to understand. I cannot think of any other way to lay out that one that would be easier to understand.
Schools are now considered "socialist indoctrination centers," so I guess next conservatives will be shooting up schools and assassinating teachers for "collaborating with the enemy." Not to be judgmental or anything, but Gawwd they're fucking morons.
Thats another thing. Any liberal politician is inherently more "socialist" than a conservative politician. The world "socialist" just has more extreme connotations than the word "liberal." I don't see what Obama is doing that would take him SO much further down the socialist side of the spectrum as opposed to other presidents. Clinton also tried to reform health care but failed. I don't recall him being constantly called a socialist like Obama is. Then again I was just a kid when Clinton was president so maybe I missed that part. Anyway, my point is, by typical conservative logic today, all liberal presidents have been socialists. And all conservative presidents have been fascists. Just for shits and giggles, I'd lke to bring up another story in the local paper that appeared just after Obama was elected. Some local crazy who owned a vehicle repair shop or something similar freaked when Obama won and started hanging the flag outside of his shop upside-down in protest of Obama's election. He had been in the military and, when intereviewed by news crews, explained that hanging the flag upside-down was some type of military distress signal to be used only in cases of "extreme danger." He went on to say he didn't want "no socialist communist running this country." - not an exact quote but pretty close. I imagine he had to try real hard to keep from letting the N-word slip out between "communist" and "running."
Teachers at my school were not allowed to show the speech. It is very sad. What kind of world have we come to when we are afraid to let our children listen to the president speak? I just hope we get out of this ridiculous culture war soon. Also, I don't see how anybody can call this a waste of time while we are forced to watch the football team prance around in the gym for an hour.
A much better one than the one that got us into Iraq and Afghanstan and torturered people, but not by much. I hope your parents have the time to compensate for the failure of the government and the school system. Football players like Vick have always been seen as more important than other elements of society. No big surprise.
Geo-you're an observant conservative and I agree with your posts .It's difficult to see grown people making such asses of themselves by being so infantile and silly. If the conservatives are ever going to get back in power,I think they better start coming up with something substantive and good for the country.
