Hello, my name is DJ and I have conservative parents. I live at home and am currently in high school. I am considered extremely progressive, but my parents think I am weird and don't let me do the things I believe are important. How can i handle my conservative parents without completely disconnecting from them? How can I get enough freedom from them to do what i consider is important? Thank you for your time.
Tell them you're a canibal. Then go back a few minutes later and say, "whoops, I mean liberal." They'll be so relieved they'll buy you that Che Guevara lunch Box.
heres what you do... you buy some crack... and you put it in one of your parents pants... than you get someone to call the cops and they search your parents and bust them for crack... once they get out of prison, they'll be liberal.
Try to explain them your opinions. I know it is hard, just try it. Silly advice, but I think that is the only one thing that you can do. Peace and love
I have the same problem kinda...they want me to become an engineer and get rich...when i want to spend my days in the field writing poetry... parents: but how are you going to support yourself? me: ::shrugs:: things'll work out = tension at home grrr
I don't know about you folks but my parents were the shittiest people alive on the planet at one point. They didn't do jack on the conservative stuff and weren't even Christians. But now my dad is ultra conservative and my mother is border line somewhere around there. People just grow up and most become conservative. It's the way the mind functions in maturity for some people. And if you happen to have some of those for parents well, just ask them WHY they don't accept certain things. Maybe they have hidden reasons or a good perception/excuse for not liking it. Open up the mind.
Nah... people dont grow up and become more conservative... older people just have problems letting the past go... so they tend to hang on to the more traditional beliefs, and resent progressive change. You grow up and become conservative is just bullshit that Conservatives would love for you to believe... Its certainly not the case as there are so many older people who are not conservative... but getting the masses to think you will grow up and become conservative is a good way for that to actually play out in some peoples minds. Older people are conservative because the world is different than it was when they were young, theyd like to see times roll back to when they were young again, so they tend to critique new things.... growing up and becoming more conservative is american bullshit at its best, and theyve been spouting it for years. Anyone who tells you you become conservative when you grow up is obviously a conservative themselves.
bleh...i have shitty parents too, but they'll never change. unfortunatly ill probably have to disconnect from them in time. i think mui had a pretty good idea though!
But people do become more conservative. It makes sense, really, if you think about what being conservative is all about. It's about keeping the world like it was. Is this not what most (obviously not all) old people want? For the world to be like it was when they were young? They look, for instance, at the fact that women are now expected to have jobs and study in university but they think "It wasn't like this when I was young... What is the world coming to?" and thus become conservative. At the same time, when they were young, they supported more rights for women. Or just look at the Generation X. They used to be so cool, but many (most?) of them act just like their parents now.
yeah, my parents think Im "weird" too, but they are pretty cool about letting me do most things I ask them to let me do, and they things I know they will say no to I just dont ask
That is exactly my point, but I do not think that means conservativism is any more wrong/right because of that... its just more about human psyche... and it certainly doesnt mean that you are going to become conservative when you get older.... some of the most radical socialist/anarchist/communists ive ever met have been over 50+ years old and they are wise beyond their years. When you get older you also become crazy, everyone goes crazy at some age if they make it to there. Doesnt mean being crazy is right, just the way things go.
Mui, this may be American 'bullshit' but it is the truth. Its the norm. So is the fact that society can't legalize pot with out a large economic shock. The majority of our nation is over 30 years old. Having conservative parents is a great thing anyways. You get the view points from another angle! You learn where to stand and where to let go. You find whats important in yourself but you don't hate your parents because they have their own views. They push them on you because you are their property. Thats another part of American 'bullshit' that is the norm. This is the whole reality of America people. We all have different views. Diversity is a beautiful thing. Make yourself flexible, aware, and understanding of everything around you. But don't let politics run your life. You'll always be losing the fight because someone is going to stand for one thing or another.
