(I think this is probably the fifth thread I've made about college since being on the forums)

So did you go to college? If so, where? Also, what did you major in? Are you glad that you went, do you regret going? How has it helped you career wise?

I don't mean for this thread to be gay I promise lol.

ugh I just like cannot figure out what the hell to major in. I have about 2/3 semesters of community college done... so I want to have my associates by this time next year and transfer to a four year college..... I just don't know what the hell to major in.

It's like, I know the economy is bad, so I want to make sure whatever it is, I'll be able to find work. (and hopefully be successful.)

I'll probably just end up listening to my mom and majoring in finance

What kinda stuff do you like?
I chose film & media because that kinda stuff really interest me, and because i live in los angeles lol.

I graduated from community college with an Associates degree back in 2001. Then I went to a university for about two semesters before dropping out. I haven't went back to college, and I don't really plan on it at the moment. I really have a lot of reasons for not wanting to go back, and a lot of it ties in with my general views and overall philosophy of life. I don't expect people to agree with my reasons, but they're mine nevertheless.

To me it seems like college has become one of those things that you're supposed to just do without even questioning, even though it's overemphasized and overrated, and means a lot less than it used to (even though people are made to believe otherwise). I believe in living modestly and not taking on the stresses that a real career entails. I am a person who is fine to just drift through life, not caring much about whether I live up to other people's standards or not. So far I am getting by just fine as a single person without kids. I am not hurting for money, and I am not in debt like almost everyone else I know. I simply live modestly, while still being able to afford the things I like.

College to me is really a sham. Nobody goes to learn, but simply to receive a piece of paper telling them they're able to enter the "real world" and get a "real job" (whatever that is). The cost of college is also ridiculous, and you certainly don't get what you pay for. I feel one of the big reasons college is so heavily pushed is because it requires people to get into debt at a very young age. Debt they will likely never emerge from.

Also, the more people that have college degrees, the less important people with college degrees become. That is simply a fact. Perhaps that is why there are so many people with college degrees who cannot find work.

I'm interested in a lot of shit but like..... I guess maybe I don't have a passion. like I love music, don't wanna work in music. love movies, don't wanna do anything tv/film related. love photography, don't want to be a photographer. I love cooking, but I don't wanna be a chef.

I guess I view my hobbies different from work. like work is work. I feel like I could do anything and be good at it.

Do you like helping people? Psychology stuff? Maybe working in a rehab clinic or something or helping people with other issues would be good

Only thing is... I have a single parent and we don't have a lot of money. financial aid will cover everything, if not almost everything. hell when I went to community college first time around I got money back.

I just can't justify not going. My good friend just graduated last May, finance major, and is making $65,000/year.

Not that money is everything. I know that... I just do want nice things in life. And to be honest, the floating along thing is what I planned on doing.. just serving/bartending, making quick cash, and it has gotten me by fantastically thus far... but I can't be in that environment forever.

That's another thing about careers. There are such limited options, and who really picks a career because it's something they like? No, they do it because, for whatever reason, they believe they have to because it's what has been pounded into their heads.

Not attacking people who go to college, because I believe in people making their own decisions. I am just stating how I feel personally.

Yeah, it's up to each person to decide for themselves what is best for them.

Dude I honestly thought about that. I mean, as a recovering addict I can definitely contribute a lot...... I just feel like relapse rate must be pretty high constantly being around that?

A kid i went to school with was addicted to heroin and something else but i forgot back in high school for like 3 or 4 years and now he works in a rehabilitation facility and has never relapsed. Just depends on the person though and how hard they work at staying sober.

I went to a technical college and got an associates degree in Industrial Mantenance. I enjoy the work, and I'm good at it. The reason I went into it was security.....machines are always breaking down, and no matter where I am something always needs fixed.

I just got a job offer from a company that will pay 100% of tuition costs, as long as the classes go along with my job there. So if everything works out right I'm going to utilize this to get an electrical engineering degree free of charge.
