Any other college dropouts who would like to share their experiences?

I dropped out approximately one year ago now, and it was one of the best decisions I have made in my life so far. I have learned far more through self educating and experience than I did in the two-ish years I was sitting on my butt in college.

I dropped out of high school and am currently living a life far better than I could ever have imagined. Literally. It's not about what some institution claims you know, it's about what you actually know, but more specifically, about what you do with that knowledge.

I was kicked out of college my freshman year for having poor grades haha. I wasn't too serious about college back then. I still kinda wish I could quit college and do something else, but I stay because I only have about a year left, and I might as well just finish!

Some people just don’t have the aptitude for college :(

How about a trade school, culinary arts, or perhaps computer /electronics [IMG]

    Hello,

jepp, that's the way to do things. But... if you feel that you had chosen the wrong profession, please change that. Nobody should blame you for dropping out because you changed your decision. Laziness isn't an excuse ;). A few years ago I had given lectures at the university. There were alway a few students which were obviously in the wrong course. They had neither talent nor did they fancy the typical tasks that come with their studies. That is no fun for the lecturer and for the other students.

    Regards
    Gyro

That's the kind of job you get in today's market WITH a college degree.

    Pretty much.

Here's how I see it. I was paying thousands of dollars, that I didn't have, to go to college. While I was there, I was paying $150+ per textbook, that I was going to use for a few months, on subjects that I had no interest in. ALL of my time was spent sitting on my butt in a classroom, being lectured to, then going home and writing paper after paper after paper, all while trying to hold a full time job. My life was incredibly stressful, to say the least. Dropping out lifted an enormous weight off of my shoulders and gave me the freedom to study things that I was actually interested in, at a much lower price.

I consider myself an autodidact. I AM motivated to learn, and I study the hell out of things that interest me. I'm not some lazy kid who thought college was getting in the way of TV and video game time. I just don't feel the need to get that piece of paper that says I am willing to jump through society's hoops, especially at this point in my life. I'm a young guy and right now is the absolute wost time to settle on a "career." I have not seen enough of the world, and everything on it, to know what kind of degree I would want to drop that much money on.

Like I said, I'm a young guy. This is the best time to go out and explore the world. I paid off all of my debts, quit my two jobs, got out of my renting situation, rid myself of most material belongings, and have absolutely nothing holding me back now. Why should I waste my youth sitting in a classroom and going into debt? I'll do that when I'm old, and can't go on crazy adventures anymore. Right now though, I'm cutting my own path. I'm going to do some hiking and WWOOFing in the Appalachians at the end of this month. From there, who knows! I'm just going to see the world and gain an education through the people I meet, and the adventures I have. That is far more valuable to me than a college degree.

I just finished my freshmen year in college.

I didn't love every minute of it, but I loved a good deal of it, the friends, partying, and a good bit of the learning. You just wern't studying the right things if you had a problem, go find your calling, then study it. Organized education can suck dick if it's in something you don't care about.... If you really like learning, it's awesome when you have a smart professor who knows every in and out of his subject.

Then again, I'm going to a small school with one of the highest PHD/undergrad ratios in the country, the classes are like 20 people, HS sizes, so you can start conversations and whatnot. If you started as a freshmen in a big school with football stadium style classes, well duh, that sucks dick.
