I'm sick of using aloe, it makes my dreads look realli flat. I use it to condition my dreads rather than taming my frizz. I don't wanna tame my frizz-I love itt! Anyway, so has anyone used cononut oil to condition? I heard/read it somewhere...I was going to get some today but in the chemist it was a tenner and I know you can get it in health food stores for like a pound....anriuhria ANYWAY, I'm waffling. mewww, experiences people?! :cheers2:
i havnt used it. i know a lady who uses it on her curly crazy hair (i assume for moisturizing) but thats it sounds like it would work well though.
I don't like the feel of aloe. I imagine that coconut oil would moisturise better as the dread would kind of soak it up. I feel that aloe just kind of sits on top of my dreads till it's washed off
I never condition my dreads, other than using dr bronners, or I guess ACV. Sorry luxie I know that wasn't the answer you were looking for, what about shea butter? Personally I'm sceptical of it, but I've heard lots of good things about it. Oh and I've never tried coconut oil either, so all in all that was a useless post. Sorry....
yeah i feel the same about aloe. i rarely use it, but it doesnt really do much for me. you could probably also use shea butter, or something made from cocoa or she butter. id make you something if you wernt so far away i think coconut is a good idea though.
I have no idea but i know what your talking about with the aloe. I hated the feeling of it on my hair :/
coconut oil melts realli easily, like on your fingers as soon as you pick it out of the jar^__^I don't think shea butter melts as easily so it could leave clumps?
I enquired about Shea Butter when I first came here. I was advised against it coz it was like wax. So maybe coconut oil would be better. Or. You could try em both and give us your verdict.
Yes even though I've had no experience whatsoever with it I wouldn't mess with shea butter, though once I get an idea about something I can be a little narrow-minded sometimes. Didn't bcmama recommend using coconut oil as conditioner? Maybe see what she has to say?
i use coconut oil. i just rub it into the bottoms of the dreads, only because they're the dry parts, and leave it to sit for like 20 mins. Then I rinse it out with ACV, then wash it all out with shampoo. It's the best way to condition IMO.
the coconut oil thing (well probably not originally) comes from rastas in the first place, the one that melts at body temperature and you rub it in and then rinse out. helps and smells nice. want to try
I know when I first started my dreads I used a shampoo that was coconut oil based. It smelled wonderful, felt great, but made my knots slip out. So....if your dreads are at a good place and fairly tight, I would think it would be ok...but if they're still loose I wouldnt reccomend it....good luck though! =]
The oil would lubricate your knots a bit Luxie. I haven't used it myself, but I've used the Knotty Boy conditioning spray and also actual conditioner. I first tried the spray conditioner when my dreads were only a few months old, and it sent a load of loose bits sliding out all over the place. It's ok now my knots are tighter, but not for regular use. I used hardcore post-bleach conditioner on a couple of patches of my dreads where the knots had actually become too tight (yeh I know that sounds weird) and had contorted into hard bent knuckles that were freaking me out They smoothed out in no time. I know that doesn't answer the oil question directly, but it's just to say it's very easy to lubricate your dreads and send the knots sliding out. Then again, you've been stressing over the mega shrinkage, so a bit of downwards slidiness might be in your favour anyway. Oil might make your roots look greasy also.
i dont think i would use coconut oil lux, i have some here I use as a moisturiser and its pure but also a little greasy. Just wouldnt want your knots to get slippy Shea butter is also pretty greasy. So you could just be swapping the dry dreads for greasy dreads. Im just thinking of other alternatives...but I get back to you.
in some parts my hair is loose but on every dread there is at least 3 inches of hair thats completely knotted. can you get ACV anywhere or just in health stores?
