Hello, I am a Yank who loves fruit cake and Mince Pie even though most of the people I meet here in the States say they don't like either. Well, my wife baked a Christmas Cake on Sunday which I will feed Brandy to until Christmas. This Sunday for my birthday dinner I requested Beef Rib Roast and Mince Pie. I also have a Plum Pudding I was given. So I was wondering if you could share your thoughts on these foods with me; what is your dessert of choice after Christmas Dinner? do you put icing on your Christmas Cake? what fruits must you have in your cake or which do you dislike? Plums, Raisins, Sultanas, Currants, Figs, Dates, Cherries, Citron, Mixed Peel, etc. do you soak your cake in booze? If so, what do you use? Brandy, Rum, etc.? do you eat Mince Tarts during the run-up to Christmas? does anyone serve Pudding AND cake at Christmas Dinner? do you have any special dessert traditions for Boxing Day? thanks so much, I am keen to hear your replies
1) christmas pudding 2) yes 3) classic mix like you mentioned 4) i dont but i know other that do for weeks on end 5) no, strictly pies 6) we do, mainly becuase both are available 7) no, possibly a triffle
Thanks so much! FYI, I soaked the fruit for the cake in Pedro Ximenez sherry for 7 weeks and now that it has been baked I am feeding it a little Brandy every few days.
I have known a Yobbo Aussie to presume that a 'Mince Pie' was made from minced meat seeing as this is the land of the meat pie, so it's important to note it is minced fruit.
do you eat Mince Tarts during the run-up to Christmas? does anyone serve Pudding AND cake at Christmas Dinner? do you have any special dessert traditions for Boxing Day? 1. Christmas Pud with lashings of brandy butter and whipped cream. 2. Yes… Icing but marzipan layer first (even though i can't eat it as I'm intolerant to almonds)… Christmas cake just isn't the same without it… keeps it moist i s'pose… 3. Love all those… 4. I like it with that orange one… can't remember the name.. hold up, i'll look it up…. it might be Cointreau… yes, Cointreau… 5. I'll eat Mince-Pies any time of year if offered but i seem to do it only during the run up to Xmas… at Xmas i have to have brandy butter and whipped cream, as with my Xmas Pud… at all other times, just the pie, hot or cold… no matter 6. No… just Pud or Pies… have Cake later… 7. We never have had any tradition for boxing day but there is usually pud, pies and cake available, and we often have a sorbet or ice-cream or Apple-snow available too as a lighter option, if anyone has ANY room in their tum after eating all day for two days… leftovers… yum…
Here's my thoughts after the Holidays: Christmas Cake: I love fruit cake but no one else in my family does so making the Christmas Dinner dessert that was a waste, so next year I will eat fruit cake during Christmas tide but for Christmas Dinner I will have Plum Pudding, Plum Pudding; we will have this for dessert plus something else for the kids Mince Tarts; I will have my wife make a bunch and have these during the run up to Christmas.
I love how much food is made during Christmas. I love any kind of tarts and crusty desserts, so that has to top the list. Plum Pudding Then Christmas cake. This year I purchased a cake and called it Christmas cake, though not a traditional one. Its a raspberry mousse and chocolate mousse cake with chocolate sponge cake layers. So delicious!! Very light, and rich in flavor.
Brandy Christmas Pudding Yes Most fruits I find, add a taste of delight Don't so much soak but mix in the flavours of Brandy, Rum and liqueur No - self discipline is key It is a sweet, so depending on how the stodge goes, the sweet is served immediately afterwards or saved for supper later in the evening Not really - (depends on the offers on the run-up to Christmas)
