I've avoided consoles for years 'cos I like the flexiblity real computers give me :) but I'm very tempted to get me a modded Xbox, really to have a little media box for the living room that isn't gonna get clogged up by windows crap, and that we can play some games on too.

there's also a perverse nerdy temptation to put linux on a Microsoft machine ;)

Anyone got any advice on places to buy/things to be aware of etc?

yes, be aware that unlike the PS2, the XBOX does not have the power to launch missiles

And unlike the Gamecube, there is no oral sex outlet.

My friend modded his X-box, the brand he used was "Mr. Mod Chip", so far he's had no problems with it. There is a certain brand of hard-drive that's supposed to be ideal for x-boxes, but I can't remember which one. I've been wanting to mod mine for a while now, but I just can't justify spending another $200+ on video games.

It's simple - if you don't buy the Xbox mods, you'll probably end up spending the money on Twinkies and cheap hookers. And you don't want to be a fatass with herpes do you?

I've ordered one now, splashed out on a 80GB harddrive and a mod that makes the LED blue instead of green ;)

Reading up on the stuff you can do with chipped boxes is very cool. You can network it up and access the contents of the HD and DVD drive using FTP. I'm sure my drive will fill up with emulators and roms very quickly ;)

Such a fun toy, I've got a 120Gig in mine. Any game or app i want, just pull it down with bittorrent.
