The Chinese government is censoring major Internet sites, including Twitter, Hotmail, Youtube, Livejournal, Flickr, Microsoft's Live.com and even the Huffington Post just prior to the 20th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre. They no doubt fear a repeat of that event, wherein hundreds of student protesters were murdered by Chinese soldiers.

    REMEMBER THE TIANANMEN SQUARE MASSACRE!

That's nothing new, China blocks loads of internet sites all the time. Try finding any information about Tibet when you are in China.

I know they have huge filters / blocks etc (on some of their stated aims I agree with - remove porn etc,) but isn't there anyway of bi-passsing those things? Proxy sites etc.
I can appreciate the official routes might be blocked...but I can't really believe there is no access to info about certain issues at all.

is it even possible to censor the internet? i thought that was the one place where you have total freedom, unless in school because they put filters on the computers but for a personal computer i doubt it. so glad i dont live in china either way though. my prayers to our opressed brothers oversea.

Ahem, I heard, ahem, but never tried, that there are proxys that will easily allow you to go anywhere if someone, hypothetically, wanted to look for them.

No offense Skip, but with all the site blockings, I am amazed that HF has not been targeted. Keeping in mind all the info that is likely deemed sensitive by the govt on this site, I have seen much less popular and less controversial sites fall victim to the great fire wall. I'll keep you updated while I am still here, if anything happens.

    Facebook was recently blocked too.

Maybe the Chinese gov't likes the fact that we criticize the US gov't!

And we have some communists, socialists, marxists here too!

But more than likely they can't block us cause we've already blocked them!!! ;)

Is that to say that no one from China can access this site (normally, not using any hacking techniques i mean)?
