My daughter has two cherry trees and while one is healthy, the other has what she describes as 'red blobs' on its leaves and they were there when the buds burst. She's scared it passes to the other and is on the verge of felling it....though that is a final resort. Can't find anything on the internet as to what it could be, so, anyone got any ideas. We're in UK by the way. Thanks for reading.
is it a cherry fruit tree or a cherry blossom tree? i cant find anything from the 4 main books i use.. though one has something about 'bacterial canker'? i have no idea though, sorry =[
Thanks for replying. She lives in Lancaster, NW England and although it's colder there I'm thinking climate can't be the problem as her other tree has plenty of fruit, and her neighbours cherry tree is laden. Went on a visit last week and saw the tree. What green foliage there is, is very sparse and the tree looks sick. Diseased leaves are deformed, quite twisted look as if they've been scalded and blistered. She thought about canker, but it doesn't fit the description. She's toying with the idea of taking a photo and sending it off to Kew Gardens. Poor tree.
thats prolly the best idea, photos to kew and other gardening places. we havent had this problem with our cherry, so i cant really envisage it
Mirabel, I have the same problem with BOTH of my newly planted cherry trees, and have trawled the web and my books to try and find an answer. Did your daughter find out what it was? Is there any control, because my trees don't appear to be that affected yet.
It sounds more like gall to me. But if that's infected and sick not sure what you can do to save it. Probably had more problems than that before the gall was set there by wasps. Probably suffered from canker years before. http://bugguide.net/node/view/110070/bgimage I am assuming it's a mature tree. If it's just a young one you may be able to prune the gall off. We get gall problems on our oaks around here, but it's usually the sick old oaks the wasps attack. Cherries don't really grow in our valley way too hot for them here. On our oaks it's caused by wasps I understand on the cherries it's caused by mites. Not sure it's going to kill the tree, but your tree sounds sick. Have you tried a bordeaux spray regime? That's what we use for peach leaf curl. We do it in the fall Thanksgiving, and again around New Years before the buds swell.

Sorry, can't have links in posts. Peace, poor_old_dad
So we can never see what the real problem is? Right on top of your new duties aren't you dad? Can you suggest anything for these cherry trees Dad?
