I'm from the States so I'm not hip to the slang; what exactly is a "chav"? I'd like to know what "doss" means too.
To "doss" is to lounge around idly, not doing anything productive. A "dosser" is a tramp, hobo or bum.
very very much so. the chav thing has many representations throughout american culture, but primarily it's uneducated, thuggish, annoying and poorly dressed.
Yes. In fact, I was trying to remember what chavs were compared to by Americans on another forum, and you just reminded me, everyone agreed the guido is closer to the chav than the redneck.
In Scotland they're called "neds". A friend and I encountered some of them in Govan (one of the less posh parts of Glasgow) who were amusing themselves by throwing raw eggs at passers-by. When they ran out of eggs they resorted to empty plastic bottles which they fished out of rubbish bins.
i'm very surprised devvo hasn't come up on this thread! ultimate chav. http://www.fat-pie.com/chavs.htm i recommend 'devvo as owt.' 'tuesday with devvo.' and 'another episode of devvo.'
The term CHAV,seems to have evolved since it was first used.at first,it refered to common people, who suddenly found themselves rich, like lottery winners and street slags who married a footballer etc ( tabloid description )...then,out of the blue,it started being used to describe any common person who did something '' above his station '',like wearing burberry and was generally violent, drugged and drunk. - '' oi'm a chav, cos i got oakley singlasses '' :hat: '' awite guv,as ama chav 2,cus i wear burbewy hats '' iggy: '' oink! i an dwug deawa,an i wich chav wiv a piggy bank, ain't i ''
