If this technology already exists then ignore this. So, we have central air and even central vacuuming. So why not central computing? Yeh I know we have servers that feed workstations, but these workstations are still individual bulky computers with each still having hard drives, mobo's etc. I understand you can set up a wireless network and freely walk about the house with your notebook/s but still, this is a whole computer your toting around. So, why not have a central computer/server whatever, and very light visual/input units that only show you what the central computer is doing via radio waves, bluetooth, whatever. Basically what I'm saying is a server with massive processing power, gigs and gigs of ram, a canyon of a hard disk etc. Then I guess essentially you just have a wireless lcd monitor with a wireless keyboard and touchpad in the style of a very thin, very cool (tempature), very light and very powerful notebook. Now lets deal with the issue that your computer is stuck at the house. Well if your a desktop user then your stuck at the house anyway not to mention in one room at one location. If you use a notebook on a wireless network then now you can do the same roaming around the house like you use to but with a light weight model that won't melt your legs off and is also alot more resistant to damage like water, dropping it, etc. Plus this unit has more power than any standard notebook could fit into a case with todays technology and multiple times the battery life of a standard notebook. "But my central computing is limited to a 500ft. radius. What about business or travel?", you say. Well that's why you can purchase the optional travel unit which snaps into place underneath your wireless interface which includes all the missing components to make a complete mobile notebook independent of the central server. Now you can take your computer to work etc. "What about all my files that will be stuck on the central server? I can't bring those with me?" Yes, you can since the travel unit docks at the central server and is seen as a workstation. You can place whatever files you please, install whatever you want etc. into the travel unit and when attached to the wireless interface it will all be there. The travel unit will have minimal processing power to keep down energy consumption, heat, weight and cost as when on vacation, the average person is just checking email and for business you should be using MS office (or Contact Business) not playing Oblivion with graphics at max. You can imagine the savings Universities and businesses would see, instead of buying an expensive server and alot of mid priced workstations, buy an expensive central computer and a bunch of CHEAP mobile interfaces. Now all I need is someone who can design and build all this shit for me, someone to finance it and someone to run the company while I smoke DMT in my silk robe atop my 200 story building giving a new meaning to the word "high". We will call the company Elite Systems Corp. and will run microsoft into the ground when we release our own OS called "Contact" which will be the most advanced OS introducing A.I. that will learn and adapt to your habits completing tasks for you that you would normally have to tell the computer to do each time. Paying your bills, scheduling appointments, searching the web for you, applying for credit cards and the list goes on. Contact will become a friend of the family with its speech technology, holding intelligent conversations, helping your children with their homework. Contact will then be integrated into your phone system, taking calls. It will tie into your car and home alarm system monitoring every detail from what door is opening and who is coming through it, to how fast is your son driving and is he smoking in the car and even what he's smoking. Contact will control your television changing the channel for you because it "knows" you don't feel like watching a certain program at a certain time. The list is limitless. So who's ready to get this venture rolling?????? $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
its called a terminal. a lot of bussiness use this setup. like Autozone. they have a central computer in the store that handles request/resources and serves them to the terminals in the store. the terminals have a mobo, CPU, RAM, periferials, and network cards. no hard drive or anything. about the travel/remote/locality issue. you can have no security this way. and what layers of the OSI model would something like this run on? you would need a whole new protocol too. development costs are usually the most expensive with something like this.
basically this is a very old model of computing you are describing called "main frame " computing where a sentral server technology delivers all your needs. IT departments are returning to this as the distributed model of computing is becoming costly, insecure, inefficient and time consuming. The idea now is to have terminal services running (Remote Access Desktop) and users log in to a central computer. It is easy to implement over wireless as well. The model you describe may also relate to grid processing just google for the terms "grid processing" "mainframe processing" and "distributed computing" you'll soon be an expert and then wouldnt have to walk round in a bathrobe all day but could afford some clothes
