I've been thinking about making furniture out of cardboard for a while.
I've finally decided that when it warms up outside I'll actually do it. Mainly because a few friends are going to help me get used cardboard boxes. My friends think I'm crazy, but they're still going to help me out.
I was just curious to other peoples opinions of this?

yeah, cardboard is a great material to use for making all sorts of things. Don't stop there though, you can use all sorts of discarded material. I'm moving in a few weeks and lack furniture & money, so I too have been thinking of ways to make my own. Have fun :)

i knew of a guy in the seattle area, who got an insight, into using cardboard to manufacture cheap housing and furniture, mainly as a remedy for homeless people to have shelter.

he was learning as he was going along with his inspiration. the main problem he had at the time, was the need to compact the cardboard with a press, to give the cardboard enough strenght.
he was trying to work out a deal with an automobile scrap yard, to use their press during their off hours.

you might want to do some research on this matter of cardboard, from others who have done this same thing you are planning to do.
no use reinventing the wheel from scrach, if others have already solve most of the pitfalls in doing like this.

Cardboard furniture is awesome! It's surprisingly sturdy too. (check Ikea - their EXPEDIT bookshelves are laminated cardboard!) I remember seeing a really awesome cardboard chair awhile back, but don't remember where it was. You might enjoy this site however - http://www.leokempf.com/cardboard.html

Shit Glen, that's farking negative aint it?

On the topic though, cardboard is an excellent medium for furniture to be made from,I would hope that the glue used was as non toxic as possible. If framing was needed I would go for used pallets, external would look shit hot,a bit of blackened iron screwed in and BANG,something differen't.:2thumbsup:

Cardboard comes in different plys, or strengths. Double ply is good for furniture, this will have an outer wall, then corrugations, an inner wall, more corrugations, then another outer wall.

It can be cut on a band saw, circular saw, or scroll saw. Glue with waterproof Elmer's glue, paint or polyurethane to finish.
