Diesel, a police dog in France, was killed during the raid to locate terrorists responsible for the Paris attacks. Diesel was the first to go in during the raid that saw several officers wounded and a suicide bomber killed after blowing herself up.
He's a very "German" looking Belgian Shepherd. His eyes/face remind me of my parents dog... Very sad.
This is such a shame and it's easy to ask why we raise such a benevolent animal to such a purpose. But when you see them in action, actually running toward the trouble, it's impressive. They have been with us for so long that I wonder not only what traits they have gained from us, but also what traits we have adopted from them. It would seem that in the 21st century we wouldn't need to raise dogs for this. As if technology could fill the gap. Clearly it cannot and we're certainly facing a far more primitive enemy these days. In the series "Fringe" the humans in the alternate universe had domesticated Badgers of all things. I wonder what that would be like.
We spent tens of millions on state of the art "sniffer" technology for airport baggage screening, only to discover that dogs still do a better job, at a fraction of the cost. Too bad we can't train bears. Their noses are much more sensitive and accurate than that of a dog, with hundreds of times more nerve endings where it counts. We can't get them to work for us. If we could, it would be like having a complete FBI crime lab on four paws, except faster at getting results.
I think we both know, if I did that, I'd just pick the hottest guy out of the 132 Which wouldnt be all that different from giving too much focus on the cute doggy So, yeah, I'm talking out of my arse
Russia is sending a puppy to France to replace the fallen canine officer. They say that it's a show of solidarity in the fight against terrorism. Her name is Dobrynia. http://www.nydailynews.com/news/world/russia-gifts-france-service-puppy-police-dog-dies-p-article-1.2441511
I think that people tend to have a natural soft spot in their hearts for dogs and babies. Dogs are kind of like babies.
