go to your doc, they'll be able to give you a definitive answer.

you can get herpes through ways other than just sex btw... but don't kiss/eat out anyone while you have any sores, because you'll just be passing it on :(

It might just be the beginning (or the end) of a cold.

Usually, I think, the reason people get those sores at the beginning or end of a cold is because the immune system is doing its thing, and may be overworked, and that stress on the person's system allows the virus to rear up and show itself. The herpes viruses hide along nerve cells in the body and flare up when conditions are right.

You are correct that canker sores tend to be the herpes virus.

    - You can get "genital" herpes on your mouth
    - You can get "oral" herpes on your genitals

Nothing stops either one from infecting you wherever you contact someone's sore.

And yes, the virus can be transmitted through "asymptomatic viral shedding" which means that you are not safe from giving or getting herpes just because you don't have a visible sore. :( This is very crappy, and demonstrates how badly we need to have medical science discover a cure for herpes.

Contrary to what most people think, canker sores are NOT a virus and are NOT contagious in any way. They are simply ulcers on your lips. I used to get them a lot until I stopped drinking orange juice. The acid from orange juice can irritate the lips. Since I stopped drinking orange juice, I hardly ever get them. So my advice is to try to figure out what is causing your lips to be irritated. Keep in mind the difference between canker sores and cold sores: Canker sores are on the inside of the lips, cold sores are on the skin outside your mouth. Cold sores are also just a symptom of a cold, not an STD. Hope this helps :)

    Peace and Love, Alex
