    Hey ppl,
I've always been fascinated by the hippy movement during the 60's - early 70's, the only thing is, I missed out by about 30 years.
I realize that a lot of ppl who come to this site are interested in the same stuff I am but I was wondering,
Do you think it's possible that there is another movement, similar to the one in the 60's?
I think so far most ppl who wish they could have been there have only been living it in there mind so basically I'm asking, if all of us got together and just started living the way the previous generation did back in the 60's, would there be an affect on the overall population or would this just die out in a matter of months or a year?
    I hope this makes sense,
    peace out...

Lately there has been resurgence in the movement as people have come out against the war in Iraq, George Bush's environmental and economic policies and the loss of some freedoms. It doesn't compare in scale to the 60s but it's there. Bush's republican convention was the most heavily protested convention in history in terms of sheer numbers, though it was not as violent as the 1968 Chicago convention.

The movement of the 60s was so huge because of the social conditions of the time: racial segregation, gender discrimination and the war in Vietnam. The war lasted 8 years and at its height involved over half a million troops, dwarfing our involvement in Iraq. I'm not saying that these problems have been completely solved but things are better than they were.

I enjoyed the 60s counterculture but I realize it was largely born out of frustration over the inequities in society at the time. I hope conditions don't get that bad again but Bush seems to be heading us in that direction.

Your mind is on the past and on the future. You're going to miss out on the present, and maybe a chance to make things even better. Don't try to fit into a mod or steryotype for an era. Make things the way you want them, and do whatever you want no matter what society thinks about it. I'm talking about sitting in the middle of grass in public and shout out nosensicle statments and HOPE to get quizzicle looks and obsene gestures. Maybe someone will come sit with you if only for a minute and you can speak with them.

    Question:
What do you mean by the 60's?
In my opinion, the 60's were NOTHING special.
It was all about the spirit of self-discovery and testing the boundries of the social structure and the mental psyche.
This happens everyday, just not like it did in the 60's.
Can the 60's happen again? No.
Can the movement of self-discovery, peace, love, and harmony happen again? Oh, it will... :)

the next big counterculture will be alot more partial towards anarchy and individuality. No more concentration on the feelings of peace and group love... although admirable, in the future, intellectuals will seek a singular state with themselves. if the world were to divide again, it would be between those who support a media-driven doped mass vs. those who want to tear it all apart and recreate diverse and alternative lifestyles. sort of the same as the hippy movement... except less political and emotional i would think.

technoshamanism is a new alternative movement that seems to be catching on...

The counterculture movement never really went away....in numbers and attention it did dwindle, the so-called "hippies" who were in it because it was "fashionable" left and later became yuppies. but there are still those of us who still believe in peace and love and individuality and open mindedness, it's just not as "hip" or "popular" as it was 40 years ago, which is o.k., it's a state of mind, not a fashion statement. There are more of us that you think, it's just we aren't out in the parks with flowers in our hair, but we are here, and there are young people who are of the same heart and soul coming up, which is so cool to see, maybe a new 60's will evolve, only time will tell.

the next counterculture rebellion is not going to be made for the people. It is going to be individuals rebelling for their own personal gain. There will be no more peace love and harmony.....people are to selfish for there to be another counterculture hippie movement.....it will just turn out to be anarchy

    peace,

I think Dope sick kid said it all and I agree with him! He is right on about it and this time - it's the old hippies and the young ones too. Together we can make a difference even more needed during these times. Peace The Wiz
