can someone figure this out for me

k, i need to find out my exam mark
i know that my final mark is an 80%
my exam is 40% of that
while the other 60% were my two test, averaged at a 84.5%
so, what was my exam mark???

final mark = .40(exam mark) + .60(two tests)
80 = .40x + .60(84.5)
80 = .40x + 50.7
now, subtract 50.7 from both sides so that .40x is the only thing on one side...
this gives you:
80 - 50.7 = .40x
29.3 = .40x
now this tells you that 40% of x is equal to 29.3
since .40 (40%) can also be stated as 4/10 (four over ten), you can write .40x as 4x/10 (4x over ten)
29.3 = 4x/10
you can now divide both side by ten. why? you want to get the equation down to 4x = some number which will allow you to divide some number by four.
so now you have
29.3 * 10/1 = 4x/10 * 10/1
on the side of the equation to the right of the "=" sign, the two tens cancel each other out, leaving 4x * 1. on the right side of the equation, multiply 29.3 times 10, giving you 293,
which leaves you with
293 = 4x
now divide both sides by 4
293 / 4 = 4x / 4
just like the tens, the two fours on the right side cancel each other out, leaving you with
293/4 = x
73.25 = x
now go plug 73.25 back into the original formula, do the match, and see if your final grade isn't 80
80 = .40(73.25) + .60(84.5)
80 = 29.3 + 50.7

 

So her grade is... 73.25? Al when do you get your report card?

 

I don't know. I only have your 2 test to go on and I thought of the 80% and did the math. 84 + 80= 164\2 =82 Lets hope that it's pretty good anyway.

em, i didnt get a report card. my marks are posted online, just a final and you have to figure your exam mark out on your own if you want to know.

Ohhh well then lets be happy that the final grade was a 80%. What were you other grades? Oh btw I never care about the final grade as long as the end result is what I want.

i dont know yet, i just got that one mark back. im waiting on geology...i had a nervous breakdown before writing that exam so i probably did horrible.

 

If you said that your final mark is 80, that your exam score is 40% of your final mark, that your two other tests are 60% of your final mark, and that your average of the two test is 84.5, then yes, you scored 73.25 on your final.

But you got an 80 for your class and that puts you at passing, right?

The ONLY reason you should ever feel bad about a score is if you didn't do the best you could at that moment in time.
