Without even reading that yet I can answer without a moments thought that the answer is yes.
from years of being with all types of dogs , I've come to learn that they do have a great understanding of us. and we can understand them too if you only try :)

hell yeah they can. I've been with my little dog my whole life, and she tells me things all the time. She'll tell me if she wants food, water, a walk in the small/big yard(our yard is sectioned), on the couch, off the couch, on/off the chair, on/off the bed. Thats just the average every day stuff too. I've noticed that most older dogs are alot smarter, because they have been around so long.

Course they can. Friends of our family have a King Charles spaniel (Harry) and spent ages testing him seeing what words he knew. One of Harry's friends knows all the names of his toys. If you ask him for one inparticular he'll bring it to you.
My Grandparent's dog was just as smart, he could tell the time.

I think all animals understand people in some way. Mainly through body language and tone of voice.

Branwen knows 'wait' (as in don't leap out of my arms just yet because you'll miss the hutch and hurt yourself) she also seems to know her name and always looks round if you talk about rabbits.

definitely! Dog's are geniuses... well atleast some of them. I used to have a german shepard and he was bright. He could be ordered to get slippers, attack, bark, all that good stuff. Right now I have a husky and a shih-tzu. They're personalities are so different, it's cool watching them grow up and mature.

    love,

As i tell others. Animals are like people in the fact that each and everyone has a different personality and IQ. I really love it when i meet a new dog and discover how smart they are and what type of personality they have. I find meeting new dogs is more fun then meeting new people. At least the dogs wont go talking behind my back.
