Can anyone identify this sci-fi movie from the 1990's?

A man who lives in the present day finds a large vehicle in the forest that looks like a spaceship, but it turns out that it's covered with living tissue that heals itself when it's damaged. The main character later discovers that it's not a spaceship but it's actually a time-machine and a spaceship that time travelers from earth's distant future used to travel to the present time, in their past, because the planet was dying and was almost uninhabitable. The travelers from the future look like aliens though because humanity supposedly evolved to appear that way. They also mention their "lineage."
