can any body give advice about hookahs..

my friend gave me an idea that was really good - i decide to buy a hookah (shihsa) i only smoked with it once at a friends house and it was really really cool. i don't know much about hookahs but did a little research and got one for about $40 including shipping and got everything that i needed to start smoking with , tobbaco flavors and coals and everything.

How? Put whatever you're smoking into you're bowl, place tin foil over the top of the bowl taughtly, poke little holes in it with a toothpick or whatever, then put a lit charcoal on top. You may need to add more holes, just experiment. Obviously have chilled water in the vase, about an inch above the bottom of the down stem. The colder the better. Can be water, iced tea, gatorade, wine, whatever you want. Agina, try different things for different tastes.

As to what to smoke, thats you're call.

You just smoke it. Line the bowl with foil, fill it up, and then put foil over the top the holes in it. Heat the coals on a stove until red hot, and then carefully place on foil of bowl. Make sure you have water in the chamber and start puffing. When you first start smoking, really hit it hard to get it going. After a while, it'll start hitting really nice. Just make sure to turn the coals and be careful not to knock it over. Those coals will burn holes through anything and everything. Happy Hookah-ing.

 

Change the water every now and then.

 

i tried a hookah for the first time a while ago, i liked it, sorta, but im not for tobacco... ugh...

pot is better, and less harmful!

 

i know that there's a hookah bar downtown, very contraversial. but its obviously only tobacco so...

the water:
plytheman gave good advice. the colder the better, though depending on how thick the glass is, you might want to be careful... if you wash the base with hot water right before using it, then drop in real cold water or ice cubes, that could cause the glass to crack or shatter. also, if the glass is a really light color, stay away from liquids that would stain it... red wine might taste good, but it can also leave a nasty ring or tinge to the glass. the same goes for certain juices and teas, if they sit too long. mint tea is a nice light color and would taste nice with some herb in the hookah. or perhaps some fruit/berry tobacco and a fruit juice in the base.

the foil:
put the foil on and poke the holes before you light the coal. i keep the holes closer to the center... you obviously don't need to poke a hole in the foil so far to the edge that the coal wont reach it. i tend to put one in the center, and a few in a circle/square around it.

might be a good starting point... add more holes if you want it to burn faster and less holes if you want it to last longer and pull smoke more slowly.

lighting the coal:
did your hookah come with tongs? if it did, use those to hold the coal and just light it with your lighter... it takes a few seconds, much faster than having to warm up the stove or transport a hot coal from the kitchen to your smoking area. just evenly sweep the flame of your bic until it's evenly heated. little sparks are going to fly off, but they don't hurt or burn you. plus, you can hold it right above the tin foil when you light it, so you don't have to worry about dropping it as much.

starting it out:
pull long, hard, and evenly to get it started... that shouldn't take more than a few breaths. then just sit back and puff away. you'll know when it's about kicked, cause you'll start coughing a lot and it'll taste funky.

in terms of what and how to smoke, are you referring to different flavors, or are you talking about herb?
it can take a lot of herb to fill the little ceramic part, especially if it's just you or you and another person smoking. so i definitely recommend adding some sheesha. i like layers better than mixing the two. since herb is generally more expensive, you don't waste as much trying to get it going, or once it's about to be kicked. also, when you sandwhich the bud, it slowly builds you up to a subtle high, then WHAM you suddenly realize you're very high... and then gradually decreases. plus, you pull the herb over the bottom layer of sheesha, so you continue getting high even after you've smoked the herb layer. i don't like the 'salad mix' way as much... like when you just toss some tobacco and bud together. you don't want the headiest nug pieces on the bottom part, cause that won't taste as good when you're about to have finished smoking. then again, a hookah strictly for sheesha might be better for you. when the cops broke up a party my friend was having, they were all over the hookah... lucky for this guy, he never smoked herb out of it for that very reason. so if you're going to keep it on display, you might want to keep it herb-less, too.

also, one last tip, especially if you're a renter:
don't smoke the hookah in the same exact place if you smoke very frequently. sheesha can seriously stain your ceiling, especially if you only smoke it when sitting on there far right couch cushion. so sit on the other side of the sofa or the floor or something every now and then, if a stained celing is going to cost you a deposit or something.

 

hookah's r cool, but they can be a pain if you dont know how to use them.

first of all, if you use foil, youre askin for some nastieness in your lungs. its also very hard to keep them sealed. if it has more than one hose, youre going to have to deal with varying human personalities at thier worst. if you decide to use water, and the down tube is made of wood, its eventually gonna swell shut. hookahs are good though, i gave up on them due to the varying human personalities at thier worst part. sometimes my extreeme patience makes me lose patience with other people. (yes a contradiction)

 

foil doesn't work,you can transmit disease.Use latex...

I've never used one, but they sound pretty cool.

There's a store in the local mall that carries hookahs. They're really cool lookin things.
