California....the hippiest place to be ?

I was watching the drug years and they said in the 60s california was the most hippiest place in the world ..... is that still today? Idk ... I was just wondering LOL

I wouldn't really say that, really. Probably Northern California is more hippie than south. I think Oregon is even more hippie, though.

 

You do know that "most hippiest" is ungrammatical, right? 'nuf said! California is the third largest state so I'm sure there was plenty going on all over the place.

I think you can find hipness in most of the large cities in California. Certainly there are plenty of shops in Los Angeles (Melrose Avenue) as well as San Francisco (Haight Street) or Berkeley (Shattuck). I imagine the non-republican hippies tend to live where life is less expensive.

I consider myself and my own lifestyle to be hippie in nature. I live 12 miles outside downtown Los Angeles and I grow vegetables, have fruit trees, raise hens, maintain compost and pray that the planet be saved.

What makes a place hip? Certainly I can find hip things to do or see here. It's all perspective.

 

Northern Cal rocks, southern Cal is all about money...Northern Cal is really friendly, the only reason I moved away from Northern Cal is because I like the warm beaches...but I can't seem to find my mellow beach community down here...it's too expensive. I have a great job and everything...but it's just not mellow like in the north...

 

some places are really hippie like humbolt county & santa cruz...santa cruz is my 2nd home & is probably the coolest town ive ever been to...you'll meet the most interesting assortment of people

well my idea of hip anyway.

everyplace chainges every ten years, sometimes less. what was the (sf) bay area, a lot of it moved up north, at least for a while. sf area is i guess happening again and maby not as bad as l.a., but still way expensive. up arround grass valley in the sierras is real. and for as relatively small a place as it is, more culture and hippness per capita then any place i know.

way to stereotype socal. socal is not all about the money. tell that to the millions of poor people that live here. such as myself. mellow beach communities here oceanside in san diego county, huntington beach in OC, venice beach in LA county, and santa barbara above that. if those aren't mellow beach communities in don't know what is. peace.

 

I would say definately not. Like it has been said California is a huge state, and was very out of the way, and still being discovered many years ago. Now, like every place else it's overpopulated.

There's a great number of hippie towns in California, but there are in most places, it just happens that California is really big.

the hippies in southern california are nearly non-existent, no where near how i assume it was in the 60's.

 

san fran isnt really northern california. Arcata, now thats a hip NorCal town....

I would have to agree with the NorCal-SoCal division that these folks are making. It is true that there are some exceptions, but on the whole Southern California seems much more materialistic. I'm living in Orange County now, but Santa Cruz is the place for me.

 

The hippies have long gone... Santa Cruz and Santa Barbara have a scene but it is not what it was 10 years or 20 years or 30 years ago...

Santa Barbara is heaven on earth.... great beaches, great atmosphere.. it is key to have connections in your favorite hipppie cities... it can be difficult to find the hippies without a connection

for example.. Santa Cruz has banned dogs from their main street... kinda sad... since every crew of hippies has their dog.. now where do you find the hippies?.... they are no longer on main street..

I spent my teen years in the South SF Bay area. That was the 60s. Then my 20s and most of my 30s over the hill in Santa Cruz and SC Mountains. That was the 70s. It was Hippy Central then. The little mountains towns behind SC were Haight-Ashbury in the redwoods. Anything -- and I mean anything, went! I was back there a year ago. It's still not Straight-America, but most of the real hippies have all left years ago. Now it's more like Liberal-Yuppie Central. Nearly half the population works for the Silicon Chip Industry over the Hill in the San Jose Area, and they commute like the Indy 500! The place is still beautiful, but WAY more popluated and built up than the good old DAZE. And the population there is still just about the loosest and most kicked back your gonna find. But, it breaks my heart to see how it is all just a faded picture of what WE once were. I spent the best and happiest days of my life there. But in the 90s the tidal wave of population and explosive growth finally swept over it. Now it is starting to remind some of Carmel -- up scale and touristy. Still, the old aura hangs on though. And, there are still a fair number of Hipsters still tucked away back in the hills, and nooks and crannies. Hang out a while, and you'll find 'em. But they're getting out numbered. Where -- is my time machine?!!!

 

I was born and raised in the Bay Area and owned a house in Boulder Creek (SC Mountains) for 6 years. That area is far more populated with TRUE hippies than Santa Cruz itself.

San Francisco is now home (even though I live in the UK for another year!) and you don't find so many TRUE hippies in the city anymore.

I would agree with a few other posters here that N. CA and Oregon have more.

 

Small world. I owned a cabin in Boullder Creek, '75 to '84. It was off of Pleasent Way, in the Wildwood area, across the river from the Mt. Store. Way up on a hill. And yes, the hills were, and still are, hippier than SC.

 

Imagine that! I used to smoke weed and have sex in a cabin in Boulder Creek! The woman who owned it let me crash, fuck her and smoke her weed between dead shows in the summer of 87. I was 21 and she was 40. What great times.

 

i almost moved to boulder creek. i'm just down 9 from there though. still a lot of hip folks up here.
