The Burning Man festival is about as close as I can get to explaining the hippie philosophy. Of course there were people who went too far, and overdosed, but most of us were hoping for a change. It was a revolution, and it isn't dead, it is snoozing a bit....as I hippie, I learned that the government isn't a father figure, and that it only has as much power as the people allow. Being self-sufficient makes big business, (and the greed heads) nervous...so what do they do ? They promise an easier life thru chemistry, and pharmaceuticals...they built Wal Marts, and fast food..dripping with sugar, fat and refined carbs..."cheap and easy"..and so many people fell for it. And the commercials today are promising more wonder drugs to cure the results of a life of excess. Time to open the other eye, and refuse to stop following Uncle Spam...aka : Rip Van Stinkle...to dictate our lifestyle by way of the hypno media. :X Monkey see..monkey imitate....It would be dangerous and boring if the world became too homogenised. Being self- reliant, and learning survival skills can take a bite out of big corporations. Voluntary simplicity can be a trip, and the best we can do to make the world a better place is to meet someone who doesn't have much half-way, and share a perk.
could you repost this in Events in the Burner thread, please? I have a lot of never beens asking and I only hit regional events in Colo. Thanks!
You are in Colorado ? I stay there in the summer. San Luis Valley. I go UFO Hunting....and chasing vortices...and ghosts...Crestone...spooky State.....full of rock people...Colorado is fantastic.I am in the South Mostly for about 3 months hunting up hippie pioneers.
Just want to let you folks who wanna go to Burning Man that the low level tickets have already sold out. (thats the 175, 200 price tickets) Only the3 $225 and $250 are left with some low income tickets. Go to their ticket information page to find out more info: http://www.burningman.com/news/ticket_info_05.html Good luck and hope to see some of you folks there! Just look for my bus, bright white top, sky blue bottom. Her name is "The Cloud Dancer".
hahaha yea.. stocking up on suplies from walmarts and menard's (most people do) and paying $250 to get in... if you wanna give an example of the 'hippie philosophy', i suggest the rainbow gatherings. they're free and usually truly self sufficient. and it's probably more rare for people to go to them just to party. don't get my wrong, i like burning man but i wouldn't say there is really anything 'hippie' about it except the total freedom for self expression ...and all the drugs, of course . last year had too many drunk people
I couldn't agree more. It was also more good vibes there. Next time its back in the western side or in the midwest, I'll have go again. This time in my bus. Definately self sufficent-truer to the hippy style.
I spent hours looking at the Pictures from the Burning Man Gatherings. When I saw the Pink Bunny slipper vehicles, it brought back memories. Life used to be fun. I was living in Florida, and I kept asking "Where are the flower children ?" ( I wanted to re-connect with my tribe...) I became depressed, because people seemed to be getting too conservative. So, with the help of the net, I re- connected to a great degree, and actually located many of the flower children. What I found too, was a variety. I looked for a common thread, and for the most part, it manifested as a reverence for Nature...and a willingness to actually do something to make a difference. I am not big on crowds, or rowdy people with bad vibrations, so I tend to support small local efforts, and buy from the little guy. Being a free Spirit is a lot like the best days from childhood. Only now, we are a bit more "stretched out".
