If I wanted to burn a movie onto a DVD, what type of file would it need to be for it to work on a standard DVD player (if it's possible)?

    generally .vob

Do you have a dvd writer? If so many software packages have dupliacters to 'back up' your dvd's.

You can make a playable VCD on with just a CDWriter, but not all palyers will recognize it.

VCDEasy will let you change an mpeg in to vcd format--playable on many dvd players and its freeware

I'm usualy busy ripping .vobs in to mpegs ;)

DVDShrink is very good. You can rip DVDs to a file or copy dvd-dvd. It lets you pick which elements to keep (foreign languages, subs special features) too. The best feature of this one is that it shrinks video from the larger capacity DVD discs so they will fit on a 4.7Gb DVD disc. This is handy since burners that burn to double density DVDs are still pretty pricey.
