    Okay computer brains;
    To put in in "politically correct "terms...I am very "technologically challenged" and in need of understanding this process of burning cd's.To further my interest,I would like to know how to connect my stereo to my computer,so that I can transfer my vinyl collection to cd.Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    CD burning is generally pretty simple and easy to understand. Although it can get more complicated depending on exactly what you want to burn. Of course you'll need cd burning software. I would say that the most well known are either Nero Burning Rom, or Roxio Easy CD Creator. I personally wouldn't recommend using either. I prefer something that is simple, gets the job done, and is open source (the code is available to the general public so that other programmers may attempt to modify the code in order to create a better program and fix bugs). Here is a good list of free and open source programs. http://s88204897.onlinehome.us/DigM/freeware.html There are plenty of cd burning programs on that list that are just as good if not better than most commercial programs. I personally use Deepburner. Once you have your software you are ready to burn. It really isn't that hard. Here's a page with a few guides to help you get you started http://www.webtree.ca/newlife/cd_burning_info.htm

    Here's a few tutorials on transferring vinyl to cd

    Here's a few on getting your stereo hooked up to your computer
    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&safe=off&q=%22hook+up%22+%2B+%22stereo+to+my+computer%22

    You shouldn't have to spend money on any of this. If you think you need a commercial app send me a PM before you spend money on it.

    Windows XP can do that. Greg, it depends on what format you want the blank disk to be. (Audio that will play in ANY walkman, or car CD player, MP3 that will play on some newer home theatre or DVD players, or Data to transfer to another computer or play on Winblows media player.)

    Shockw4ve;hey dude thanks for the info....helped me out a bunch,really appreciate it.As hard as software goes I lucked into a Nero 6 disc.I thought I was buying a discounted CD-burner from the "evil empire"(wal-mart),off of their clearance shelf.....but when I got it home and opened the box,it was a sony DVD burner with a copy of Nero 6.......Oh well I win I guess.

    Esty; "idiot proof"doesn't exist in my life when it comes to these computers,I could fuck up an anvil in a sandbox with a feather.........but thanks for your info also.

    Yeah Matt I am figuring all of the differences in format out now,but you know me and the terminology of this shit.....it's all geek,to me.

    crummyrummy;I found a whole set up for a reasonable price through a place,that simplifies it for those of us who are "technologically challenged"...has the filters and eq for cleaning up the noise and hiss of vinyl.
    http://www.dak2000.com/ I thought it sounded alright,but I could understand it from that write up.

    Anyway thanks again for the info.

    NTI is shit. Use Roxio or Nero.

    The tricky part with using a computer to do this though is getting your vinyl's onto your computer. You're going to have to be able to record it in through your sound card. Now the snag with this is that recording in from any analogue source into a computer and then digitising it is going to add a shedload of noise to the signal. The result really wont' be very acceptable.

    What I recommend instead, is if you're going to buy anything at all, just buy a standalone CD-burner. Then you can take the output of your record player and record it straight to the CD burner in real time. The sound quality will be much better that way. Although you may find a lot of pops and clicks appear on the resulting CD - this can be solved by copying the CD on your computer using one of the afore-mentioned programmes (NTI will do the job of copying fairly well as well). What will happen is your computer's CD drive's error correction strategy will be good enough to read the CD better than most ordinary audio cd players, and so the resulting copy will have far fewer errors in it and will actually sound better on a CD player than the one which you burnt in real time.
