OK, so I have a couple of weeks free in April and I want to head to Burma. The thing is, I don't want to support the brutally oppressive military regime over there. So, I'm unsure as to whether I SHOULD go ir not. Would you travel there given the chance, or would the politics of the country stop you from going there?
absolutely. but don't take a camera. one of my dad's friends had a very nice camera confiscated because he was taking pics that were too "topical."
I don't own a camera so I should be cool. Anyway I remember the video of the japanese reporter being murdered by the police there for taking photos of the monks protests a while back. I'll just ask my friend to bring her camera. But really, there are seperate reports from people. Some saying that your money spent while travelling will support the regime and others saying it will support the common man. I'm fairly sure that if I have the money, I will go though.
if you're being careful, likely the cash that you hand someone will stay in their pocket and not be taken by someone else. i'd consider it interesting enough.
You're right I'd guess. I really want to go there because, of the surrounding countries, it is the least touristed. I also would like to see for myself the effects of a 40 year military dictatorship.
That'd be a blast. I had a summer of authentic Burmese meals cooked for me. A lot of spicy fish.
GO!!! Maybe bring some food/supples from Thailand with you? To limit the chances of supporting this regime?
