I'm currently reading a book called "Awakening the Buddha Within" by a lama called Lama Surya Das. He studied in Tibet with several different Buddhist Lamas in the 60's and 70's, and really knows his shit. It teaches you about the principles and beliefs of Buddhism, and how to incorporate them into your daily life. it's very neat. :)

I wonder if they have a Buddhism For Dummies type book. The problem I've had with finding books on Buddhism is that a lot of them are written for Buddhists, and are about small parts of it. Meanwhile, I'm not a Buddhist, and I'm just looking to read an overview on it.

i'm pretty sure they do have a buddhism for dummies book, but personally i wouldn't resort to something like that. it's more than likely written by some westerner who just finished researching buddhism his/herself and then translated it, as they see it, in to a simplified form.

the book i suggested is very easy to understand, and is very good for helping you to incorporate buddhism into the western culture. plus, it comes straight from a buddhist lama. can't go wrong there.

i like this one: Tibetan Teachings on Death and Rebirth, by Lama Ole Nydhal. its Written by my Lama here from denmark and gives a nice down to earth viev on the subject. The tibetan book of dead is also a good one, i never travel without it..

The Buddhist Bible compiled by Dwight Goddard is what Kerouac into Buddhism. You might want to check it out. It contains texts pulled from every sect of Buddhist thought. You can find it at most bookstores.
