Hi all... As you may know I am going to breastfeed my son and well I have a few questions that i hope can be answered.... I was wondering where I can get tops and dresses made for brestfeeding mothers? Also What types of shirts were easier for you to breastfeed in? Thank you all for your input

Anything that buttons up the front is fine. T-shirts can just be lifted up to nurse the baby. If you're shy, a button down shirt over the t-shirt gives you more coverage.

I didn't buy anything special for nursing, a) they're expensive, and b) they're ugly IMO. My regular clothes was all I wore.

I just wore my regular clothing when I breastfed, but I did wear nursing bras. I actually went topless most of the time while I nursed, but definitely not in public or when we had visitors. *lol*

    Peace, and good luck!

I wish I had some cute things to ware but most things I found were after the fact. There are some things online stores and such that offer fashionable breast feed friuendly clothing for women that are not funky looking...YOu just gotta do a search. They are things that are easy access etc for baby feeding.

I only had a couple of nursing shirts, but i found they were actually harder to navigate than my regular clothes, lol, you have to lift-the-flap just so, and find the slits underneath, which are sometimes nowhere near your breasts, lol. Besides, most of them still have these big, conspicuous flaps in front, instead of just an extra layer that goes all the way down--like, do you think no one notices that???

In the winter, it's easy, because you can wear a t-shirt or something comfy, with an open sweatshirt, or something unbuttoned, and use the front of that to drape over whatever needs to be hidden. In the summer, i often wore a tank top (one with the shelf bras inside) and just popped my boob out the top, haha! If i was in clear public view, i'd just drape a light receiving blanket over my shoulder (babies need the shade anyway) and there ya go! Or, of course, nothing ever beats a loose t-shirt.

    yup...:)

but you know what, anything but breastfeeding feels weird to me. Why if you are able to and want to you would then choose to get a bottle out and pump your breast of the milk to put it in the bottle to feed the bubba..all this while you were capable of putting the baby to the boob by the way..why you would go the long complicated route to do something which is so natural and healthy I don't know...
and why you might be worried in public, I don't understand..personally for me it was a bit more of "why the hell you looking" than worrying about hiding myself!!

By the way fallenfairy, I found the feeding bra's really good, easy to get access to when out in public and even useful for holding pads to soak up any excess that escaped in between, especially early on...therefore whatever I wore on top I didn't really mind..only thing was was that my belly was still jelly then (hasn't got much better now but we are on the way!!) and I used to be a bit self concious about it...but once again the "what the hell are you looking at" thoughts and stares got me through any situation in which others may have questioned the appropiatness....for example if I am eating in a restaurant I have no problem with breastfeeding, the idea that people might want me to go to the toilet to feed my child disgusts me!! Wear whatever you are confident in I say and get some really comfyfeeding bras and go for it!!

Mammals were meant to feed with the MAMMARY glands, that is what makes us mammals. There is NOTHING "weird" about it.

Some babies can get full on one breast per feeding, some babies need both, some babies and mamas decide during the feeding whether to switch or not. It is second nature, to know when or if to switch after a few weeks of breastfeeding. Breasts don't really "run out." They are not bladders or storage units, they are secretory glands, meaning MOST of the milk is made during the feeding.

I can't imagine feeding my babies and toddlers any other way.

    Awwwwwww!

If you go to www.mothering.com they have a lot of links to breastfeeding clothes. I do like to wear dresses, and as I have spent a huge amount of my adult life breastfeeding, I got tired of always wearing two piece outfits. I did buy my self some nursing dresses, so I could nurse comfortably in a dress.

I always wore pants under my dresses so that I was free to pull them up wherever without flashng my knickers everywhere...but it sounds like your dresses were a different design?

The ones I had had a kind of "Trap door" with slit under them. You could open the door, (it looked like a shirt kind, I have to find a picture) and then the baby could get at you through the slits.

I also had nightgowns with slits, (and a fold, so they would stay closed when the baby wasn't nursing) because I love nightgowns. I also used to buy old lady type "waltz gown" nightgowns. They always have button plackets at the front, over the breasts, so you can just unbutton them and let the baby nurse.

Here, look at this one (yeah Motherwear is a little expensive, but you can see the trapdoor in this one. It just looks like a "waist" on the dress, but you pull it up, and the slits are under there.

here is a link to how the openings work

I like the first two. I HATE the "single center opening" as there is too much pulling, and my boobs are too far apart and too large for this opening. But I really like the first two.

I love that dress, too. Too bad I'm not nursing anyone anymore. (It's on sale on the Motherwear site, look at the first link I gave.)

Yeah, the little slip like thing UNDER the trap door is nice for "mama belly."
