Who uses them? Which one should I buy? I'm fed up with supermarket bread and I can't be bothered making chapati these days.

wow,,it only takes 20 minutes or so total i dunno,, we got one for christmas a few years back,,used it a couple times,,if your used to making your own you wont like the bread machine bread..

its sure not worth the convenience to us,,but then again we only bake once a week now and it takes 3 hours to preheat the oven,,but boy that fresh brick oven sourdough sure is worth the effort,,aint no bread machine makin bread like that.. ;)

I used my bread machine every week until it broke...it was really handy to set the timer when you're out all day and come home to either fresh bread or pizza dough ready to roll...

It was my gateway drug to actually making it by hand...

Not everybody has a few hours to spare making bread from scratch, HHB ;)

we use our sourdough starter,,it takes 15 minutes first knead, rise for a half hour,7 minutes second knead,,rise for a half hour,to 45 minutes.. thats 22 minutes of your time.. hardly a few hours even if you stood there and watched it rise.. lol...

Well, I'm sorry, I didn't realize everyone was supposed to do things YOUR way.

I don't use sourdough starter and I can't go too far from home if I've got bread rising.

theres always a excuse to get outta making homemade bread..
hell theres a whole slew of breads that dont require any kneading at all,as well as no rise breads..
it has nothing to do with "my way".. i was merely pointing out that it doesnt take a whole lot of effort to make a loaf of bread from scratch..

if you just need a excuse for a machine then make one and get one.

personally,as i stated before, for the trade off in quality they are not worth the convenience they provide, but if you like eating sub standard breads to save you a lil effort, far be it from me to stand in your way......

Isn't the main advantage of bread machines over hand made bread that you know when it's bready?

    1 cup flour,one cup water,
place in a quart jar, poke several holes in the lid of the jar and let sit in a warm place.

each day take half of the mixture out and replace with a half of cup of water and a half of a cup of flour.
repeat this once a day for about a week..
youll know its getting ready because it will begin to bubble when you trade out the mixture for fresh flour and water, also it will begin to get a layer of alcohol on top.(the alcohol is what helps it rise)

then its ready and no more replacing is needed ,except when you take from it to make bread,,then you just take a cup out(you will add more flour to the cup of starter when making bread, look up a recipe),replace with half a cup flour and a half cup water and leave it sit till your ready to make more bread..

store it in the fridge once its done.

if you dont use it for a month or more you will want to feed it,,by repeating the flour water step,,just once..

really is easier than it sounds.. lol

Sounds great, is it possible to poison yourself by getting this recipe wrong though?
