I want to test out other shampoos so I bought some Lush things. I didn't realise until after payment that it contains SLS. Have I spent an obscene amount for nothing? Do you you SLS shampoos? Is it going to damage my progress?

I used lush karma for months and never had any problems, except that the bar last for approximately fuck all washes, rather than the 30 they claim.

I've used Ivory Soap, Suave Daily Clarifying, DreadHead HQ and right now using KnottyBoy.
I don't know which ones have SLS, but i know that KnottyBoy doesnt.
Didn't have any problems with any of them and since there are no Lush stores around my parts, I haven't tried them.
Maybe when I run out of my KnottyBoy shampoo I will, but that won't be for a while cuz I got 3 bars of it.

i don't know about the Lush stuff but as far as branching out goes I've used the Knotty Boy bar and then Dr Bronners bar and found that i was getting build up in some tips, i dont know whether that was from KB or DB, but i've read that just solid soaps are harder to remove residue.

So anyway i moved onto the Dreadhead HQ liquid soap, even though i've read its various other things repackaged (i didnt find it cost too much compared to old shampoo+conditioners i used to use predreads so that doesnt bother me). anyway since using the DHHQ its really softened all the tips back up again so i would recommend that, but now i'm using the Dr Bronners bar again, and then the DHHQ at the same time, so i scrub with the Bronners then makesure nothing gets left behind by washing with the DHHQ =]

lush have stopped using sls. I've used it since before having dreads and loveloveLOVE them:)washing my hair is a joy, I have to stop myself doing it everyday.
I don't know how you got so little out of yours pypes. I bought 2 bars (new&godiva) and still have half of godiva and just finished the new bar. you only need a small small amount!! I just lather it up a lil and massage it onto my scalp and rinse ;)

I have been reading through all the ingredients in the last 2 weeks or so, when I went lush shopping! lol! I went because I was going to buy that jumping juniper shampoo bar people mentioned here for being good for dreads. But didn't because that, along with any of the others I could see did have SLS in. Anything that doesn't, seems to have some other thing which looks very similar, also SLS, but different words, which I can't pronounce ofhand, haha.
I just stick with baking soda, works well, cheap and if you want it to smell nice, just add whatever essential oil.

I agree that in the end this is probably the best thing. You can have a whole range of fragrances if you want, and it's just so simple and effective :)

I'm bummed about that. Leaves my hair feeling tacky and leaves junk on my scalp. After reading a post by BD maybe I was using too much, so gonna try his recipe.

So why do they still list it as an ingredient? Bought the exact same bars as you. Are they nice? Do they work?

sls will not be damaging to dreads or anything... basically you can use any shampoo or soap that you can use with undreaded hair, you just need to find one that agrees with your scalp and meets your cleaning needs at the same time.

using or not using sls is a personal choice based on how you feel about having a harsh detergent and potentially harmful chemical on your skin. i avoid sls, but it wont hurt your dreads to use it and it will probably get them cleaner than anything else.

I thought it was the SLS that leaves residue?

Yeah, it is.. I just thought it was that which dreadies have to avoid, to avoid the residues.. which make dreads not-dread.. :S
