I lovvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvve chocolate, but I haven't had any (besides Endangered Species Chocolate) for over a year. I suppose it was hard, but probably not as hard as being a slave. We all know that most of our things are made by extremely cheap labor, but most of our chocolate (and coffe, too) comes from slave labor. Free labor. The buying/selling of humans. Please don't eat chocolate from these corporate giants anymore, and please educate people on the subject. Almost ALL (if not all) giant corporations use "slave labor" for their production. Trying to escape that means either starving or spending twice as much on questionable alternatives. Whether or not I chose to eat M&Ms (one of my favorite candies), they will still have buyers, and it will still always be produced.
That's really not true. Almost all use cheap labor, not slave labor. And if you're okay with eating your favorite treat even though children are being captured and forced into slave labor, beaten and killed so that people like you can have your precious candy, then that's your call. Please educate yourself on the difference between cheap labor and slave labor.

IMO, reducing the use of chocolate by the US would hurt both the legitimate farmers and the slaves. I think that it is a good spot for the US to use political muscle to force the hand of the government of the Ivory Coast to make changes. I think we have a better chance of accomplishing that through visible protest (blogging, emails, letter writing campaigns) which can consist of a relatively small number of individuals compared to what would be necessary to create a dent in the chocolate market with a boycott.
agreed on all parts. Chocolate is an important crop, and a few hippies not eating snickers won't do much. We the consumers need to speak out. Chances are if their chocolate sales went down things would only get more difficult for the chocolate producers. ):
