well obviously were not talking about u... u made a great point..hippies r people too, flawed and imperfect... i think all people have love in their hearts, thats not neccesarily a hippy exclusive trait, just some choose to share it with the world... im bothered less by people like u, who chose to continue living a life style as close to their ideals as possible and shared their knowledge with their kids but by the people who moved into the suburbs and chose comfort over human values... wenever i visit my parents all i hear is the same old song and dance, wen r u gunna grow up, wen r u gunna stop being so idealist...
LOL, seriously, how does 2 years as an adult qualify one to be President of the United States ? Most 20 year olds I know have $2 in thier checking account and maxed out credit cards.
They have left you with a giant goverment that consumes all your resources and opresses you, yet they continue to demand more taxes. Your Social Security contributions are being siphoned off to pay for vote purchasing projects. :nopity:
I think the moral of this whole thread is dont have kids, once you have kids you have to abandon certain hippie qaulities like not haveing a formal job. Its easy to take care of yourself but once you have someone else to take care of you have to really work for it, and that means being part of the system.
hey 6, how does 12 years as an adult qualify one to be president of the united states...george bush has been an adult for 42 years, does that mean hes qualified to be the president?
I agree with the original post and would say that its probably one of the most sensible threads I have seen in this particular subforum. I agree with your historical analysis but I presume you write from an American viewpoint since you have overlooked that since 1975 the anticapitalist movement moved to Europe - yes the hippies in the USA sold out but thats not too bad - in Europe the Sex Pistols and other anarchist punks began to dwell on the works of Guy Debord a french intellectual who became disillusioned with hippydom after the paris uprising of 1968 - by that time hippies were just materialistic bourgeois drug users. To make hippies realise what had happened to their movement they focused on distancing themselves from opiates and took coke and speed not dope and heroin - then they took the communism out of it and pout anarchy in its place. - they reinvigorated the situationist international - but only because it needed to start the revolution again - now hippies have woken up so join with us - please lets do this revolution in 2007 Join the new situationist revolution Anarchism took hold first in Britain then after (as it was known) West Germany, and spread throughout Europe. At first it was in need of sorting out what anarchism was and what it would believe and now since the mid 1990's it has united the left wing against capitalism. Maybe you Americans are unaware of the impact European dissent is having on capitalism but we can garauntee a demonstration of 400,000 at each G8 meeting and the same at the WTO and World bank meetings. Each time there is usually a riot involving between 100,000 and 200,000 protestors Dont believe the police figures here look at the picture its a history lesson http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protests_during_the_EU_summit_in_Gothenburg_2001 and we only stopped after the governments threatened to kill protestors but we can hold our mouths closed no more - next year we mean it !!!! When the boomers began to get jobs, families, and started "selling out", they did this to raise their children, our generation. Now even if they have sold out, they passed their ideals onto our generation. Now it is our job to take over from where they left off and continue to make change for the better.
sentient that stuff seems a lil violent to me, as if its advocating destruction? is that wat u see anarchy as being about?
If you really want to have kids, then don't let having to make certain compromises keep you from having them. As for being a part of the system, not all systems are bad, and not all the parts of any system are bad. As long as you embrace the realization that there's much more to life than the all-consuming pursuit of material success, and you live your life accordingly, then you'll be all right. DEFINE ADULT!
There will always be A System. What system is proposed to replace the current model, will it really be any diferent?
To all the old hippies I solute you, we must simply do the best we can to change things for the better. Sure no person out there is perfect and some of us have certain disabilities or limitations beyond our control. For those of us who have certain limitations beyond our control we must accept that and simply do what we can with what we have left in us without complaint. I am a hippy type person living on social security, I am thankful for this program that I qualify for. One thing about not having to work is it gives me more time to set a positive example on this web site. To me the old hippies have let no one down, they did there part and quite well. Some things out there do change with time, that is life. Peace be with all.
that is the fucking way man, you get it. someone said that a lot of people of have the right mindset for a better world. i would like to know on which evidence this is based. in my town lot's of young people are pretty materialistic, i hope my vision on my generation is one big lie and very subjective. and as long as america will not change it's politics towards a more environmental-friendly policy other countries like japan will not change either, because they want to pursue their policy of capitalism without boundaries. but they wouldn't dare to go on with that if america will change it's policy. I hope i'm totally wrong about my generation, but if I see which ideals they seem to have it is only materialism, materialism, materialism.
Rainbowedskylover, let me just say that the current generation can be summed up with one word: indifferent. It is not going to change much if anything and really, I will do all I can to jam it and move it, but given what I have seen it's a train with a lot of momentum. My best comment to you is to realize that there is more to progress than what the government does. I'd say our impacts on the environment come mostly from our daily habbits (meat consumption and foreign oil dependency) which the government should do more about, but quite honestly will only REACT to a demand. The start of this is in social change... Change because what we have now, sucks. P.S. For all else, please don't say hippies "sold out" unless you are typing this from a library, and you sleep in a tent... I don't like hypocrites just as much as I don't like people looking to the past and blamaing others. The hippies of all people were ACTUALLY HIPPIES so if you want to blame somebody for being not a hippie then look to those people. It's pretty ironic, really... but the generations in the 60's had a lot of influence, which deserves respect, not disdain. The big message: LEARN FROM IT don't dwell on it!
Having children certainly does change things, but do not make it impossible to live the "hippie" life. My partner and I had five daughters, and we continued to follow our ideals, which was living a simple life, and not being weighed down physically or spiritually by materialism. We lived in tents for 15 years, and birthed all of our children in the tents in the woods, with no electricity, or midwives. We now live on a converted schoolbus.( still hippies-cyberspace hippies) We did not work at "formal" jobs the entire time (still don't), had outdoor work, odd jobs, agricultural employment, housekeeping, work exchange etc. We managed to not be part of the system, not even having ID or filling out income tax, and we were down to a quarter in our pockets quite frequently. Our children were happy and healthy, and we all got to stay together most all of our days. It was what we wanted, and so we made it happen. By the way, our children are just awesome. Of course, not many people would want to live without the comforts of conveniences, but I am just saying it is possible, and children don't have to make it impossible for people to keep true to their ideals.
Life experience counts for alot, so does a good education. Would you want a 20 year old managing your retirement fund ? How about preforming surgery on you ? How about designing the safety features on your car ? Or defending you in court ? I don't know, maybe you would not mind a kid doing this stuff for you, but me personally, I'd prefer someone who took the time to educate themselves in thier field and then proven themselves in lesser roles, working thier way up. I'd also prefer someone who can relate to me, someone who knows what its like to be a man who has responsibities to himself and others. I am not a GWB fan, I did not vote for him nor do I agree with his policies. However, he is better qualified to be the President of the USA than I am. He went to both Harvard and Yale, getting the best education money could buy, and he did okay. He was a business man, his earlier businesses failed, but he learned from his mistakes and did reasonably well later. Finally he was Governor of one of the largest states in the union, he was very popular and by most accounts very successful. In this country, I would guess there are less than a thousand people qualified to be President, like it or not, GWB is one of them. My point is, it is not the time that passes that is important, it is what you do with that time that qualifies one to be President and there is no possible way a 20 year old, even a genius 20 year old, could live enough life to aquire the skills and wisdom required to be President.
I agree with the first point, except for the fact about hippies selling out, It is certain that a bunch of them have, yet there are still many who have not, just look around the forums and you will see that, the person who created this haven has not sold out for god sake. I do agree that we need to make the changes now or our world will end up screwed for us and the future generations, the hardest thing is getting the motivation, and lets be honest here no single person can change the world, but each single person adds to the hoard, help us grow, educate others on our current plight, put up posters, go to protests, and organize them, go to congress, do anything you can to spread the word, just dont sit here and talk about and then go do nothing about, use this as a jumping off point and let this grow to something great, we have the power, now spread the word!
