I just want to say that calculating your BMI is the stupidest thing EVER...I mean, I just calculated mine and it says that I'm overweight. I don't think I'm overweight...above average MAYBE, but come on. It doesn't take into account the shape of ones body or the bone structure or anything. BMI's suck.
I have a lot of muscle...and we all know that muscle weighs more than fat. So BMI's are stupid in my book...
I remember when I first found out about the whole BMI thing back in the early '90s. I checked Michael Jordan's stats, and he was overweight. At that point, it seemed pretty obvious that BMI is a bunch of hooey.
Yeah, that BMI stuff is messed up. It doesn't take into consideration what type of build you have at all.
BMI is somewhat usefull in a blanket look at health of people with sedentary lifestyles. But it doesn't take body frame or condition into account. Mike Tyson would be obese as measured by BMI. People who exercise more not only generally have more muscle mass, but more bone density, so I wouldn't read too much into it.
I just calculated mine, apparently... I'm underweight. I actually am indeed skinny as shit. Oh well, I'd rather be skinny than famous.
From what i remember BMI's calculate how much of you're weight is fat, so technically you be thin weight wise but if a certain percentage of your existing weight is fat instead of muscle you could be unhealthy. thus, a thin person can have too much fat, and a large person could have less. it all depends on how much of your body weight is fat and how much is something else... like a 125 lbs person w/30% body fat is overweight, but a 250 lbs person w/7% body fat isnt... right?
A BMI is a body mass index, which basically averages your weight to your height in order to determine how much space you take up (mass). It doesn't really have anything to do with how much fat or muscle you have, nor your natural build, so it's really not fair that it categorize the weights as "underweight, average, overweight, and obese". I'm in the "barely overweight" section. I have a big ass and big titties, that doesn't mean I'm "overweight." Gaaaah.
according to the BMI, i'm skirting the grounds of obesity at 30.8 or so. haha. all the BMI is height divided by weight...takes no account of how much LBM you have
you do not look overweight at all Annie. I hate BMI's too. Mine is 23, yet it is obvious by looking at my stomach hanging over my jeans and bathing suit that I need to drop 20 pounds. Fat doesn't weigh a lot and I got lots of it! My mom and I are having a contest to see who can lose the most weight by June 1st. We started on Saturday. We both have about 20 pounds to lose so it's a fair match. I am very competitive and want to win. If she wins I am taking her out to dinner and if I win she's getting me an Emilio Pucci string bikini.
Thanks I hope she and I both win and we can both drop 20 pounds by July. I wanna be tan and skinny this summer so I can frolic on the beach nearly naked without worries!
