I have seen that Bob Dylan video on YouTube so many times with him talking to the guy from 60 minutes talking about how he made a deal with someone in another world to get where he is. I guess it worked out for him

    Oh yeah, that was fascinating.

He is a poet, underneath it all. I just think he realized that music was a better medium for reaching people.

I think Dylan is definitely a worthy recipient of the prize. Hard to think off hand of anyone more deserving to whom they could have given it.

Be nice to see Leonard Cohen get some recognition before he does croak as he's nearly as good a poet as Bob IMO.

Dylan is more of a poet than Anyone else Alive today !

    some Comments ~
For all the foibles of the prize and its selection committee, can we just bask for a little while in this one? The wheel turns and sometimes it stops right on the nose — Writer and editor David Remnick on newyorker.com.

"Yes to dance beneath a diamond sky with one hand waving free..." for this alone Bob Dylan deserves the Nobel Prize — Billy Bragg on Twitter.

I am ecstatic that Bob Dylan has won the Nobel. A great and good thing in a season of sleaze and sadness — author Stephen King.

Congratulations to one of my favorite poets, Bob Dylan, on a well-deserved Nobel — President Barack Obama.

I will agree with you about that when someone like Kanye actually wins it. I don't think it will become a custom to award the nobel prize of literature to a musician/songwriter so if this is the only one its pretty bearable (and doesn't really do damage to the reputation or meaning of the prize imo).

Bob Dylan doesnt write walmart level lyrics though

His lyrics could easily stand alone as poetry if they were never set to music

    Yup.
I came here to say something similar, I am glad I'm not the only one to think that.

Stephen King is a mediocre author at best, and Obama is another ridiculous Nobel winner.

But that's the thing - he really isn't.
He is a great musician and that's so great and awesome, so yeah, give him all the music awards you want.

I am very disappointed. Literature was suppose to be something else. I thought it was a prestigious award given for really good literature.
But I hate the world and people, so whatevs.

His lyrics WERE set to music though.
    They're not poems, they're....lyrics.
Even you said it -COULD stand alone as poetry.
They could, but as it is now - it's really not poetry.

The Nobel committee has been pretty obvious in recent years in awarding prizes for political reasons. These days they are one of the few organizations with any real clout that can criticize the empire of the US on a regular basis and Dylan's lyrics are about as subversive as they come for popular music. They remind me of Conan O'Brien's regular routine where he has his staff record hundreds of news announcers all spouting the same B.S. off a teleprompter verbatim. His mainstream audiences just laugh and laugh, while everyone else watches in horror.
