so yeah. i basically decided to bleach my dreads. I'm going for something like this: Is this guy bleached? Cos i have no idea how i can tell. also, this kid, is he bleached or natural? http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1071/602277218_8e88449fb0.jpg?v=0 my hair color is brown. thin dreads, average size: 18 centimeters. that's about 8 inches for you royalists I decided to go with hydrogen peroxide, but i have no idea how to go about it. what method should i use? Pure hydrogen peroxide, diluted with water, what concentration? What i want is a nice gradient from brown(at roots duh) to blonde at tips, so that it will still look ok even after new hair will grow at roots, and won't be a clear delimitation between bleached and non-bleached. Please, if possible, do answer to all my questions, as they are all important to me thanks
He hasnt bleached his hair neither has the kid. I'm not sure how you can get this look yourself. Maybe try henna?
Hey.. Well I don't know about the chemical dilution because I've just used regular hair bleaching kits of peroxide. Umm...that guy's does kinda look very natural, but looking at the darkness of the roots I wouldn't know if hair that dark would lighten that much naturally. It'll will possibly be quite hard to create the gradient you want. You will need the bleach good and strong to not turn your dark hair orange, but that would create a strong line between bleached and not. I guess you could experiment with a couple of underneath ones, applying the bleach at different dilutions or leaving it for less time at the hair nearer your scalp. Maybe bleach slightly different lengths of each dread so you don't have a uniform line, or just do a few to create highlight effects? Not too sure really... Sorry, I think I've probably not helped much
well i am not sure about the kid, but that guy's roots are the exact same color as my hair maybe a little darker even, so i am pretty confident he is bleached. we don't have henna here in romania. i was planning on simply buying the peroxyde from a pharmacy. and i definitely don't want it orange. well, it will be orange on some parts since it's a gradient after all. but you get the idea. i wonder how that guy did his thanks dreadhead and amy for replying on such short notice. still looking for suggestions and opinions.
It's either done by another method of dye or it's natural. There's no way that guys hair is bleached. Try a copper shade? If you are convinced it's bleached, don't use any peroxide vol over 30% best bet would be 15% but it's likely it would orange tint your hair rather than give that effect.
well i'm not convinced it's bleached as in really bleached as a method. what i mean is i'm convinced it's not natural, it may be a dye like you said, but hey, whatever works, right? btw, love your sig
after doing some research i found out that using a 3% concentration peroxide in a spray bottle and applying regularly would lighten up my hair color. If i'm not mistaken, it could also be the answer to obtaining that gradient effect. Thought them folks who are interested should know about my findings. I'll give the method a shot and get back to you with the results. I'm such a brave motherfucker for even thinking about trying this Wish me luck
Are you going to rinse it out after a spray? I think keeping 3% vol in a spray, is more for cleaning purposes (by looking at the same site) not for dyeing hair. I don't think that spraying hair with it would work.
yeah, came to the same conclusion(3% won't do much). not sure whether i should rinse it or not. it depends on how fast it acts on the hair strand. if the process is fast ( like about an hour per level using this scale) then yeah, rinsing would probably be required. on the other hand, if it's a slow process, not visible with the naked eye, then i guess i'll just leave it in. But just to be on the safe side, i will rinse after i achieve the desired color, to make sure the bleaching process is stopped. just bought a 250mg bottle of peroxide 100%. quite cheap ass, 5 RON, that would be like 1.5$ or so heh. anyhow i am thinking of making a 10-20% solution and testing it out on a piece of hair see how long it takes for it to go from my colour to that bright yellowish. I'll keep playing with the concentrations till i'm satisfied with the speed. damn this almost sounds like a science project. I'll get back to you with the "processed data".
Cool. Although the site I'm looking at says "spray the 50/50 solution on your wet hair after a shower and comb it through." How are you going to get around this? I mean, say if you wash your hair once a week, there's going to be a whole heap of peroxide in there causing untold damage.
i will apply on dry hair, rinse after. No logic in applying on wet hair since the solution is 50% water.
before i dyed my hair black, that natural gradation between brown and a lighter brown/blonde color happened naturally without bleaching. if you spend lots of time out in the sun it'll happen for your hair as well... maybe you don't have the opportunity to be out lots though.....
It is very possible that mans hair is naturally like that. Pats roots are the same colour as my hair(maybe even darker) but the tips of his are extremely light. Golden brown/blondish. My friend used to bleach her dreads up until recently and she didn't dilute it at all. The only thing you have to remember is that your dreads are sponges and they will suck up much more dye than normal hair. Also if your hair is that dark you're most likely going to have to bleach it a couple times to get that effect.
if you have really dark hair, the gradation is usually a more reddish color.... sun bleaching works great...... put some lemon juice in there and lay outside in the sun for an hour... after a while it'll start to work
i had a friend back in school that had that kinda look in his hair (not dreads) and i asked him how he did it and he told me that once a week he would buy lemon juice and dilute it with water and spray his hair then work out in the yard. the effects of the sun and the lemon juice was what made his hair go from almost black at the roots to a light brown at the tips. i have not tried this but it might be something you might want to try
Yep. My hair fades and gets lighter and lighter as you get close to the tips. People ask me if I bleach/dye my tips all the time because my hair near the roots is really really dark brown
well, things didn't turn out quite the way i wanted em too. seems like the bottle of peroxide i bought from the pharmacy isn't 100%. more likely it's 3%. also seems like pure peroxide doesn't easily come by, since you need authorization to own it(considered dangerous substance). anyways i cut my bangs(had no idea what to do with them anyways since they won't dread) and used a few hairs from them as a test sample. kept it in peroxide for about 8 hours. the sample went from about level 2/3 to level 4 maybe 5. looks like the peroxide i'm using is very diluted. i'm planning on applying it periodically (daily) till i get to the desired colour. sigh
